Beauty and Behemoth

This photo alone, which sits atop a 3.22 Guardian takedown piece by Nick Adams about director-writer Richard Curtis and his latest film The Boat That Rocked (opening 4.1 in England, 8.29 stateside), has instilled serious concerns.

Aw, that's kinda cute! Reminds me of me and the wife, in fact. 'Cept I don't have the sideburns. But the wife has the bangs!

Anyhow, I can see why this bugs Jeff. if there's anything he hates more than a fatty, it's a partially undressed fatty. He's never gonna get "Chimes At Midnight."

The review of The Boat That Rocked in the print edition of Empire makes similar points to the Adams piece. Maybe Curtis needs to find a director for his next script.

I say this as a guy who could stand to lose 25-30 pounds (I'm 6', 235), but there is NOTHING funnier or more awesome than Wells bagging on fat guys.

JW is a great, perceptive, witty film writer, and I know some people hate when Wells pulls out the fat people rants or the fast food, thread count, popcorn-muncher, party elephants shtick, but to me, that misanthropic, curmudgeonly and sometimes amusingly irrational bitterness is what makes him a GREAT character and what keeps me coming back.

Like, before I even read Jeff's text, when I just saw that picture, I KNEW what the underlying point here would be, and I start chuckling immediately.

I am no Curtis fan, but that article is more than a bit long-winded. If you're going to criticize a writer, it's good to be concise about it.

Oh, and Gemma Arterton is hot (thought not so much in that picture. If it is her, they've given her some kind of prosthetic nose).

there's only one reason for a man to not take off his socks - and that's cause you can't bend down to remove them in the confessional.

Hopefully this female character is taking a lot of drugs in this scene.

This shows how the myth of the hot girl/ugly guy continues to spread its wings in film. This photo is so extreme that it's as if it was a parody of this endless schtick.
