Odd Men Out

The Film Forum's 12-day Jules Dassin retrospective began yesterday. I've never seen Night and the City (Richard Widmark, Gene Tierney, 1950), and so I'll be catching the 5:40 pm show. I've never seen Dassin's Up Tight! either, but the rep on this one -- a militant black revolutionary riff on The Informer -- is pretty bad. Such that it'll probably never make DVD. I'm guessing that another late '60s black-militant melodrama, Robert Alan Aurthur's The Lost Man with Sidney Poitier and Joanna Shimkus, will never see DVD either. Like they never existed.

Posters for Dassin's Up Tight!, Authur's The Lost Man.

The Lost Man? Shit. Never heard of it. I'd love to see that. I wonder how many Joanna Shimkus movies are on DVD? Not THE MARRIAGE OF A YOUNG STOCKBROKER (unless Ben Stiller does a remake). Maybe ModCinema will do one. I would love to see UpTight as well.

I wish A MAN CALLED ADAM (Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra Jr.)was on DVD.

The Lost Man had such an awesome Quincy Jones score.

UPTIGHT (the title on the print) is worth a look...if Legend Films does a second release of Paramount films, this would be of interest:

I have always wanted to see Uptight out of a curiousity factor. I think Dassin was a tremendous director (Rififi, Brute Force...) until he met and married Melina Mercouri and he sort of lost it.

The Lost Man I actually have seen and it's pretty bad. Aside from a good opening bank robbery sequence, it quickly becomes a a long, boring slog with a clearly very uncomfortable Poitier strutting around wearing shades saying lines like: "Can you dig it , man?"

Night and the City is a fantastic flick! The ending is particularly well done.

Can you post your thoughts after seeing? Curious to know what you think

Assuming THE LOST MAN is too old to be put on Hulu.

I have a soft spot for Dassin. I'm a huge fan of a forgotten film of his "10:30 P.M. Summer"... if it's screening, check it out. It shows up on the MGM HD channel every once in a while. Great mood and performances from Peter Finch, Melina Mercouri, and Romy Schneider.

I've never seen "The Lost Man"... but I'm curious. It's a black remake of one of my favorites "Odd Man Out."

"Lost Man" should be seen, if for no other reason than the chillingly brilliant Quincy Jones main
title music....a sing-song children's street chant
counterpointed with ominous orchestral swells.........it's better than anything in the film
itself.

Awesome content, thanks to the article author. It really is incomprehensive in my opinion at present, but in common, the usefulness and meaning is mind-boggling. Many thanks and best of luck..
