"It strikes me that many of the surviving critics at metropolitan dailies are bloggers," Variety's Anne Thompson wrote last night. "It may be coincidence, but critic/bloggers are able to make claims for their readership numbers. Bloggers can build measurable fan bases, interact with readers in a more personal way, and demonstrate their strength with online traffic stats.
"Among the more robust critic/bloggers: The Salt Lake Tribune's Sean Means, The Philadelphia Inquirer's Carrie Rickey, the Oregonian's Shawn Levy and the Boston Globe's Ty Burr. And let's not forget the most aggressive blogger of all: the Chicago Sun-Times' Roger Ebert, who also pays close heed to what's happening in film journalism."

Aren't boggers independent of newspapers & media? How do they get paid? If it's online, it's ad supported; right? So do the ad monies go to the blogger (Ebert) or to the newspaper? Ebert has his own site. Just wondering.
Because if blogging is the way to go for critics to save the profession, then so beit.

Yep, Chicago48, bloggers can choose to display Google-generated ads on their blogs if they want to. Perez Hilton is probably the most famous, well-known celeblogger and he said in interviews that he gets money from ads on his blog.
Besides, blogs are free to read, anyone can click, anyone can comment directly to the blogger (unless the blogger chooses to disable the comment button), and interact with other readers. I think it's wonderful and so much more innovative than newspapers or magazines.

99% of bloggers would be out on the street in minutes if they counted on Google ads for viable income.
