Trumbull + Malick?

Ain't It Cool's Mr. Beaks wrote earlier this evening that he's been "receiving emails from people who've 'heard things' about what Terrence Malick is up to in Austin, Texas, regarding work on The Tree of Life. One thing he's heard is that legendary visual f/x legend Douglas Trumbull is working with Malick in some capacity.

"Is he assisting Mike Fink on the dinosaur footage?," Beaks writes. "I don't know just yet. But he has been seen knocking around Austin with Malick's crew, and I can confirm that he has been shooting footage of some sort fairly recently. Personally, I hope he's involved with the NASA-shot sequences that will allegedly be included in the IMAX movie.

"And when I say 'IMAX movie', I mean a whole second movie. That's right -- we'll be getting two new Malick movies [over] the next year or so. The first is The Tree of Life (which one source tells me is 'massive'); the other will be an 'IMAX-only' feature depicting the birth and death of the universe.

"It's important to note that these films are not narratively connected, [but] are thematically complementary pieces."

Sounds a little dicey to me, but who knows?

From http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/need-to-know-terminator-salvation.html :

Christian Bale was McG's first choice to play John Conner, whom he calls "the most credible action star in the world right now." McG offered Bale the part while he was shooting "The Dark Knight," and he initially turned it down. Bale told McG that if he could refine the script to the point where it could be read on stage without any special effects and still be a compelling story, he would agree to star in it.

D.Z., shut the fuck up.

In their initial piece about Malick using dinosaurs (which was basically a reblog of your piece), this comment caught my eye:

This project has been shooting for years now, not only have a few of my friends been extras in the period piece stuff shot in Texas, but they also shot footage of Sean Penn at the Museum of Science here in Houston, with an animation I worked on (for the museum, not Malick) in the background that shows the formation of the Earth and has dinosaurs.

Sure, it's an Ain't It Cool talkbacker and can't really be trusted, but by the same token, why would anybody lie about something like that?

Either way, in the past two days, this movie has become one of my most anticipated of the year.

How much is this costing? Where is Malick getting the money to do this? I wonder if the footage shot so far for The Tree of Life was compelling enough to grant him an extra IMAX feature.

If what they're saying about the films is accurate, and NASA is involved with the "universe" footage, it sounds like Tree of Life is the commercial feature, while the other film will be one of those IMAX only science features that play at science centers, museums and the like, such as the Tom Cruise space station feature or Ghosts of the Abyss.

Malick+Trumbull+NASA is actually more exciting to me than Tree of Life.

Oh, ok. Now the straining-to-be-positive review of Crossing Over makes sense...

Ad agencies don't decide to advertise a film with this or that publication because the review/columnist liked the film as far it went and felt sympathy for the ordeal that the director had gone through. It would be kind of nice if that's how it worked out there, but it doesn't. Ad buyers are hard-nosed.

I haven't been this excited about a particular film in a long, long time.

Call me a cinematic barbarian, but I think an IMAX film with stunning cinematography and FX, in which Malick doesn't have to try to awkwardly squeeze in a real narrative, could be a best of all worlds.

I'm interested...
