Garry Shandling's Iron Man 2 cameo role (reported here and there earlier this month) is that of "a whiney U.S senator who's opposed to defense contracting and who's particularly jealous of Downey's Tony Stark character, especially his prowess with the ladies," a guy tells me.

Anyone who criticizes the military / industrial complex is just a total wuss who has been castrated by the strong women in their life. Grow a spine, worship the phallus, and support ever-increasing military expenditures like a real man!
I'm being facetious, of course, but anyone who criticizes Tony Stark really is all of those things, and worse. But even if this is just a cameo appearance, this kind of scripting is way too obvious. And if this represents the main conflict of the movie, I'm suddenly much less excited about this sequel.

There are so many 'Iron Man 2' casting nuggets that you forget that Robert Downey Jr. and Gwenyth Paltrow are even in it...

If they want to stress the whiney part of a whiney US Senator, they should go to the source and cast Joe Lieberman.

Jeffrey Tambor already played a government flack in Hellboy and Rip Torn was the head guy in Men in Black. Maybe Garry is just playing catch-up? Will there be a part with David Duchovny in a kilt?

mizerock,
The main conflict of the story is the escalation of the violence Stark has brought upon the world again through his armored suits. Why people keep focusing on Shandling's cameo when Rourke and Rockwell have been casted is beyond me.

That sounds like a natural place for the story to go - though that's really an extention of the first movie, right?
IS Gwenyth Paltrow still in the movie? The new thread seems to suggest that both she and Howard were both shunted aside for the sequel. I guess the good news is that I won't be going into this movie with unrealistically high expectations - my spider-senses are tingling about this. (Though not as badly as they screamed when Spiderman 3 came out, which I never saw and still pretend never happened).

Paltrow is still in the movie, in fact she has recieved a pay raise.
What Howard chooses not to mention is that he was the highest paid actor in Iron Man. That sounds nuts but he was paid more than Bridges, Paltrow and even RDJ. When he refused to take a pay cut he was kicked to the curb, that and for the bad acting.

The way I heard the story, Howard wanted huge cash for the sequel, gave them an ultimatum, and they didn't blink. I didn't know he was getting more than RDJ for the first one. That obviously put everyone in an awkward position for future films. Is he supposed to take a pay cut for doing a great job? Or do like RDJ, and accept less money out of love of the story? It's looking like this outcome was pretty predictable after all.

Colin: "That sounds nuts but he was paid more than Bridges, Paltrow and even RDJ"
I'm guessing it's because Bridges, Paltrow, and RDJ weren't known for opening movies until Iron Man. That, and Howard's flicks are cheap enough to do well on home video, while Paltrow's paycheck gigs tended to bomb, and RDJ was a flight risk. Bridges is also more popular with older audiences than the 18-25 demo, so...

As opposed to Terrence Howard, who's never opened a movie in his life? Period? Ever? Really? You think that's a smart thought, Daniel?

He wasn't nearly washed up like RDJ and Paltrow, though. And Bridges is the last name you think in association with tent-pole films, which is why I'm surprised they're trying to bring back Tron.

Garry Shandling (born November 29, 1949) is an American comedian, actor and writer. He is best known for his work in It's Garry Shandling's Show and The Larry Sanders Show.
Shandling began his career writing for sitcoms such as Sanford and Son and Welcome Back, Kotter. He made a successful stand-up performance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and became a frequent guest-host on the show. Shandling was for a time considered the leading contender to replace Carson (other hopefuls were Joan Rivers, David Letterman and David Brenner). In 1986 he created the show It's Garry Shandling's Show for the pay cable channel Showtime, which was nominated for four Emmy Awards (including one for Shandling); it lasted until 1990. His second show, "The Larry Sanders Show," which began airing on HBO on 1992, was more successful. Shandling was nominated for 18 Emmy Awards for the show and won in 1998, along with Peter Tolan, for writing the series finale.
During his three-decade career, Shandling has been nominated for 19 Primetime Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, 11 CableACE Awards, a BAFTA Award, three American Comedy Awards, two Writers' Guild of America Award nominations, and two Satellite Award nominations. In 2004, he was presented with the Austin Film Festival's Outstanding Television Writer Award.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garry_Shandling)
