Earlier today it was reported by Fandango's Harry Medved in an e-mail that Wolverine, which opens tomorrow night at midnight, is accounting for 65% of all advance ticket sales. Going out on a limb, Medved wrote that "in a survey 44% of Wolverine ticket-buyers had viewed the 2009 Academy Awards Show with Hugh Jackman as the host, and 34% of those viewers said the Oscar telecast actually made them more excited to see him as Wolverine. 64% said his Oscar duties had no effect on their anticipation for the movie, while 2% said it made them less excited to see him playing the character."

There was a time a few weeks ago when you also cited advance ticket sales but it all seems rather silly to me.
Why is it a surprise that a tentpole pic aimed at young people is leading ticket sales by so much?
If I want to see State of Play this weekend there is hardly a need for me to go online NOW and by tickets. And if I'm some 50-year-old who wants to see The Soloist, I'm even less likely to go on the Internet to buy 5 days in advance, aren't I?
So, really, the entire point of the thing is circular logic - the biggest, coolest movie is leading advance ticket sales....
And the vast majority of people who care about Wolverine weren't swayed by his hosting the Oscars? Big whoop. Who gets paid to track this stuff and how can I get hired?
I hope you don't need a Phd in mathetmatics...34% of 44% of people who saw the movie 65% of ticket buyers are seeing are more excited because of the Oscars? So...is that a lot of people?
Finally - I have a huge scoop for you but don't tell anyone: Star Trek will be the big advance ticket seller next week. Wait and see!

Nostradamus made generalized predictions that could be arbitrarily applied to current events. DavidF made a concrete call... he's Johnny Smith.
