Tell It

Unless they're sick or have found a better, higher-paying gig somewhere else, people almost never resign from cushy prestigious jobs. When somebody leaves a cool job it's because they've been shown the door. So when you write a news story about some highly-placed person resigning, you have to try and convey what really happened. Who did the pushing and for what reason? Generic so-and-so is resigning stories along with generic "I've had a great run and am looking forward to the next challenge" statements are awfully damn annoying.

Yeah, I wouldn't be so sure of that... I've quit high paying cushy jobs before... I once was paid a thousand a week to write for a website and I went for months without writing a word and still got paid... but I didn't think the site was going to last long so I left on my accord before the bottom fell out.

No, what's awfully damn annoying is repeating the same link multiple times throughout a post. What's the point of that? Once is sufficient. Gawd.

Either he was a burned out and doing a sucky job or he was caught doing something weird, like, Facebook stalking or having sex with a pizza.

Facebook stalking and having sex with pizza go hand in hand.

Maybe he wants to spend more time with his family (the standard BS for leaving high-powered corporate and government jobs).

But maybe he just wants to retire. He looks to be at least 65, maybe 70. If they have reasonable financial security, a lot of people just get tired of working so damn hard. It would be bullshit if he's 50, but he's obviously a lot older than that.

If Sundance really wants to be shut of him, why are they offering him a strategic advisor gig? That sounds pretty cool too, but a lot less work. Just the kind of thing a guy easing into retirement would want to do.

Taking retirement is basically an agreement that you will be able to relax a bit as you ease into death.

I disagree with the whole premise of your argument. No matter how cushy the job you can get burned out and what was once nice and lucrative starts to feel like a hell. I'd imagine working for the Sundance Festival can be sort of soul crushing over the long run.

The trick is to go out on a high note -- before you let that unhappiness start to impact your performance. I've quit a few cushy jobs in my time and the secret is that once you've had a nice position like this, and nurtured a bunch of connections, getting another equally cushy job isn't always so hard.
