Where's Johnny?

Since he broke through with a star-making performance 40 years ago in Easy Rider, Jack Nicholson -- who today turns 72 -- has made 45 films, or a little more than one a year. Except he hasn't made a film since '07's The Bucket List and apparently has no irons in the fire. So what's going on? His absence has just hit me so I'm asking. I'm thinking of Jack Cardiff having worked until his early '90s. There's no fun in sitting around.

Isn't Jack doing some Native American/birth of the the Vegas casinos project with Paul Thomas Anderson?

The Paul Thomas Anderson/Las Vegas project rumor is almost a year old. I've not read or heard anything since.

If what he's got left in himself are movies like The Bucket List or Anger Management, he's better off sitting around doing nothing.

Although he arguably hit the wall and got fat/ugly, he was still pretty compelling in The Departed.

Pretty sad to see the aging and phase-out of legends (Deniro, Pacino, Jack, Redford, Hackman, etc.).

Watching Nicholson play himself over and over bores me. If he's got nothing left in the tank fine. He should just stay home and get high.

Hackman left on a high ('Tanenbaums'). These other guys (notably Pacino, DeNiro) are taking the bucks and tainting their legacy.

MOOSEPORT was 3 years after TANENBAUMS. But then again, TANENBAUMS blows. Since I have nver seen MOOSEPORT, I will reserve judgement. (It can't be worse than TANENBAUMS, can it?)

One of the projects that Robert Redford has been trying to get off the ground for too long is an adaption of the book "A Walk In The Woods". There had been talk of Reford doing it with the late Paul Newman. I wonder if Jack Nicholson could fit the role as a co-star? I'm still waiting for Redford's Jackie Robinson project which always seems to end up being benched and gathering dust on a shelf. I understand Redford is more likely to do a thriller called "The Company You Keep" as his next project. Sorry, I just miss the oldtimers. It is hard to get excited about Vin Diesel and Zac Efron.Come on Nicholson, make another film!

"A Walk in the Woods" could make a great movie. Too bad all of those guys are 20 years too old. You could do it with Jeff Daniels and some fat guy, though.

Nicholson hasn't consistently created characters for, what, two fucking decades. And if About Schmidt is any indication, he doesn't have the balls to carry it through to the end without resorting to the "Jaaaaaaack!" persona.

"BTW, the Nuart's screening Easy Rider for the 40th Anniversary."

You all will excuse me, D.Z posted a tidbit actually germane to the conversation and I need to go see if I can spot the resulting flying porkers...

He wasn't front-and-center at the Oscars, that's for sure. When I didn't see him there I thought, "Damn, I hope Jack's OK." Is he??

Maybe the question should be where are the parts? What's he going to play in a video game, comic book adaptation, franchise reboot or Saw VI? Where's Robert Duvall for that matter? Maybe guys like Michael Caine, Jon Voight and Alan Arkin are the early birds getting the worms. I did hear Gene Hackman in a new commercial the other day.

You have got to be kidding guys. Jack is by far the greatest actor of all- time.
The Departed, About Schmidt, Something Gotta Give are all excellent movies made during the past several years. Al, Robert and Dustin have been pretty disapointing since the mid 90's. Jack continues to make a lot of money in his films. I miss him greatly and am glad you started this blog. I hope he is ok- I would love to see him in a few more films. It was great to see one of his finest achievements come out on dvd recently. You need to see Ironweed - it is his Raging Bull film- awsome.

I haven't seen Easy Rider in years.

Jack really has been hamming it up from the beginning, hasn't he? Aside from when he had Antonioni or Rafelson reigning him in, of course.
