And this is a problem for you, how, exactly???

I think the top photo is a bit HK-esque from the Terminator films (which came out before Transformers was even a TOY, thanks very much), and the bottom is reminiscent of the cargo-loader Ripley operates in the duel with the Queen at the end of Aliens. Ripping off anyone is forgivable if the end result is kickass, even moreso if you're mainly just ripping off yourself, methinks.

WTF is up with the negativity around here surrounding this project, anyway? Just a few days back we had people coming out of the woodwork to defend Bay, but we all suddenly want to bury Cameron?

Why, exactly? All the guy does is make one kickass, fx-pioneering, action extravaganza after another. That Big Boat movie honestly wasn't that bad, was it?

I'm with you on this Citizen.

I think the fact that the movie is coming out relatively soon and all we've seen are two lame pieces of artwork says something. You don't stack the deck against yourself like that by inadvertently building endless hype and revealing nothing unless you've got some big swinging balls to back it up.

I think Cameron will deliver, and I think he's professional enough that he wouldn't even bother trying unless he knew he could.

bents and Citizen, in support of your argument, I would present Spider-Man. Remember how Cameron circled the project for a couple of years? During that time, he was supposedly testing new cameras that could move on wires to simulate Spidey's web swinging. He never quite got there, so they moved on to Raimi.

Cameron's been working on this thing for 10 years. Ultimately, the hype may be too much for it. But you won't be able to say that Cameron didn't swing for the fences.

The difference between Avatar and, say, the island from Jackson's King Kong, is that one looks like CG, while the other will be PHOTOREALISTIC. The concept art can't get that across. It's going to feel like you can reach out and touch it, like you could swim to those islands in the background.

At least I hope that's what the difference will be.

Actually not true. Transformers AND Terminator both came out in 1984 (Terminator debuted Oct 26). The toy line was out in 1983 overseas, when Terminator went into produciton.

From wikipedia:
The line was born when Hasbro representatives went to the 1983 Tokyo Toy Show in search of prospective toys that they could import to the United States market. At the time, Takara was showcasing several transforming robots toy lines, most particularly the Diaclone and Micro Change series. Hasbro bought the rights to produce the toys, but decided to release them under a single brand to avoid confusing the market with several series with the same theme."

Well you caught me in a bit of hyperbole. I knew that was going to be close. So in the U.S., Terminator debuted in October and the Transformers came out in September, and both were probably in production right around the same time. Fair enough.

DZ would never make a connection that obvious, but he would be stupid enough to think Harlan Ellison deserves credit for inventing the sci-fi tropes that were used in 'The Terminator'. (I know he sued for the credit, but I think he deserved it about as much as Heinlein deserves the credit for the Tribbles.)
