That's pretty terrible. I might have said this before but they used to reserve the brand "The Imax Experience" for movies actually shot (at least partially) in IMAX (ie Dark Knight) or otherwise recomposed to fit the entire screen (ie Attack of the Clones).

Sometimes they would show "normal" movies without the "experience" but still on the bigger screen.

I guess it depends on your POV whether it's okay or not but now "The Imax Experience" is showing movies in their normal aspect ratio, on the bigger screen but (I presume) with some kind of IMAX remastering. I saw Watchmen and was a bit surprised when it didn't fill the screen, though it still looked great.

It does preserve the as-shot aspect ratio but it's also a bit of a bait-and-switch since the "experience" no longer really takes advantage of the 60' screen.

I passed up IMAX Star Trek for a rather awesome digital showing though if I see it again I might go IMAX.

I'd home that the IMAX people want to protect their brand so it means a bit more than "slightly larger screen than the theatre next door - but for $3 more!"

Wow, a DFW-centric post. That picture of an IMAX screen at a Cinemark is on Webb Chapel and LBJ -- closer south into Dallas. The Plano IMAX he's referring to (where I saw 'Star Trek') is not an IMAX screen -- they've called it an XD3 screen for Extreme Digital and it's very nice, but there's no way it's a IMAX screen or theater.
