This comment is a complete joke. No self respecting consumer of food would ask a world class chef to make them a hamburger. And the chef probably couldn't pull it off correctly if they did. The greasier the spoon, the better.

Obama ate at Ben's Chili Bowl (a D.C. institution) as president-elect, and now has goine to an indy burger place in Virginia. All he has to do now is go to the original Ledo Pizza in Adelphi, Md. (about a mile west of the University of Maryland campus), and he'll have completed the Washington culinary hat trick (borrowing a term better applied to Alexander Ovechkin).

Gordon is absolutely right - you always get it at least medium-well at a little grill-to-order like this, for that common sense reason. The earliest posters must be used to more "elitist" places and expensive cuts of meat.

VP19 - Ledo's Pizza has franchised all over the area - and its quality has long-since gone downhill as a consequnce, I'm sorry to say. Better they should visit one of the Tastee Diners, in Silver Spring or Bethesda, still at their original locations.

I'll almost always go medium-well on a burger, and medium-rare on a steak.

Sometimes I'll downgrade it to medium on a burger (if I really trust the place), or medium on a steak if it's not one of their specialties (that's unlikely, though, as I rarely eat steak I make a point to go to a specific place when I'm "in the mood").

I think y'all are just trying extra hard to find a reason to bitch at Obama -- either that or you're just asking for food poisoning. What, you walk into a place blind and order your meat rare? Please.

FDA recommendations state that all ground beef should be cooked throroughly to kill potential e. coli and other bacteria. If Obama and Biden had ordered their burgers rare (even if that's how they prefer it), there'd have been political shit to pay.

But y'all already know that and you're just being difficult. Same as last week when everyone screamed that the White House should have photoshopped pictures of Air Force One, when everyone knows that there's no way the feds should be doctoring any pictures for any reason.

I live in the DC area for ten years and I love a good burger - the best burgers were Five Guys, sorry! Yeah, I know they franchised a bit and spread around, but the quality never dropped.

I now live just outside Chicago and a few months ago, my town was blessed to get the first Five Guys to come to the midwest - I can actually walk there, it's amazing! The quality has not dropped one bit, I'm happy to say AND Chicago is a picky town when it comes to beef - there is no shortage of mom-and-pop burger and hot dog joints on virtually every block. And the Five Guys there is just thriving always crowded, amazingly, the picky locals seem to really dig it. Between that a new Trader Joes that just opened a few months ago, we are set.

DC metro area (compared to NYC or Chicago) is pretty lackluster when it comes to small business eateries that really kick - there is an overabundance of Ruby Tuesdays and Chilis everywhere, it's sad. But....I used to go to the Tastee Diner on Lee Highway and it was quite good. One other standout for a town that tried so hard to cater to transplanted New Yorkers like me with so many "New York-style" delis, you could get the best sandwiches at Booeymongers - really good deli, I think they had one in Georgetown and one in Bethesda.

Sorry for the rambling, just feeling quite hungry, right now.....oh, and Obama's pretty cool in my book. Cut the guy some slack; I know some folks who lived in the Hyde Park of Chicago where he was settled and they say he was the real deal, genuingly accessible guy.

Was kind of cool to see him have the cash ready. I can't remember W ever even being able to pay for anything, let alone remember the price of milk. And if you've seen Roger & Me, you all remember the infamous story of Reagn visiting the pizza parlor in Flint and forgetting to pay the tab.....

The original Ledo is not operated by the same people who have franchised the brand, so its quality has remained pretty high. That's why I specifically recommended the Adelphi location, a favorite for generations of U. of Maryland students.

BTW, I neglected to note one other phenomenal D.C.-area food venue -- Hard Times Cafe, best known for its fantastic chili (Cincinnati, Texas, Terlingua and vegetarian). Their Cincy chili compares favorably to Empress, Gold Star and Skyline...and for you chili purists, the non-veggie varieties can be ordered with or without beans.

Best burgers ever, in my humble opinion of course: All-American Drive-Thru in Massapequa on Long Island.

What's wrong with medium? Medium-well is for people who are afraid to eat sushi and sashimi and stick to maki, make that carlifornia rolls. Medium-well is a very low thread-count way to eat a burger.

In other news, cheddar cheese and mustard shortages are being reported across the country. Ketchup inventories are healthy.

You know, I was going to argue with this, because, naturally, I love sushi, and I personally see a big difference between a food which is meant to be uncooked and a food which is meant to be cooked. But, I guess you do have a point, because I wouldn't order sushi from a shitty dive diner any more than I would order a burger less than medium well from the same place.

you mean medium-rare, gordon? You go to a nice restaurant and try to order a steak medium-well, and they may refuse to serve it to you...

Gordon, obviously these are not hard and fast rules. Just happens that the people I know from northeast pennsylvania, new york state, and redder parts of the mid-atlantic all eat their meat medium-well to charred, and are afraid to touch sushi....i.e. the ones who order chicken teriyaki at a japanese restaurant. These people are also generally uneasy about eating indian, vietnamese, or any of the other great ethnic varieties. They tend to be those with eastern-european and german-irish heritage, from my experience.
