If The Shoe Fits

To go by the trailer, Richard Halpern's W.M.D. is a inflammatory political fantasy along the lines of Robert Aldrich's Twilight's Last Gleaming ('77). A dud when released and pretty much forgotten, it was about a renegade USAF general (Burt Lancaster) who takes over an ICBM silo and threatens to start World War III unless the President (Charles Durning) reveals the real reason why America waged the Vietnam War. W.M.D. looks iffy and lurid and on-the-nose, but I want to see it.

the lead is from Hartford, CT, so that's cool.

One time when I was a kid I was watching what I thought was TWILIGHT'S LAST GLEAMING on TV. But it was TWO-MINUTE WARNING.

I was one of the small handful of people who saw Twilight's Last Gleaming in a movie theater the week it passed through town. Not a personal best for Aldrich or the cast, but it was still a hell of a lot more entertaining and thought-provoking than most other movies released that or any other year.

I too caught TLG in a theatre when I was a kid, and a recently unearthed director's cut surfaced a year or so ago for a screening at the Film Society of Lincoln Center.

I'd like to see that on DVD.

And by the way, that movie (W.M.D.) looks like an inflammatory piece of shit.

Wells that may be the worst trailer you've ever featured on this site. And how do you not give it the same shit for being behind the times that you do everything else?

Waiting to upgrade my PAL VHS copy of this Aldrich lost child. Not one of his best, but it's use of split-screen is totally adventurous and the picture is, like all Aldrich, very much worth a look.

Here's hoping that this movie is the "beat the shit out of president" counterpoint that Oliver Stone's W was not. Love the use of America the Beautiful and the last 5 seconds of the trailer. The guy playing W is genius. Looks like RESERVOIR DOGS. When does this come out? I really want to see this!

That is a great line! BTW, I loved Twilight's Last Gleaming!

I agree this looks lurid and inflammatory, but I also agree that I can't wait to see it! Are we really going to let Bush ride off into the Sunset to live happily ever after? I disagree with BurmaShave's comments. With the torture and waterboarding debate raging more loudly than ever from both sides of the fence, this movie may tap into something -- for better or for worst.
