Obama Motorcade
My son Dylan and I happened to be standing on 6th Ave. and 36th Street around 7:35 or 7:40 pm when President Barack Obama's motorcade came howling by. He and Michelle had been to dinner at a West Village restaurant called Blue Hill, and were on their way to the Belasco theatre for a performance of Joe Turner's Come and Gone.
I didn't know what was up at first. Something obviously was with all the cops around and the cross streets blocked off. More and more people began to congregate on both sides of Sixth Avenue. The word got around fast. By the time the motorcade made its way through the area it almost felt like we were watching the St. Patrick's Day parade. Lots of sirens, a good 20 or 30 motorcycles, eight or nine cops cars vans and SUVs came before and after the two Presidential limousines. People clapped and cheered when they finally came by. Which one carried Barack and Michelle? Most likely the second.

FYI, Joe Turner is fucking excellent. Best thing I saw when I was in NYC in April, and I saw some excellent shit - "God of Carnage," "33 Variations," and "Billy Elliott the Musical."

I was at work, but customers told me about 6th Ave. in the West Village area being crowded, and with a heavy cop presence, and why. No one I know got a glimpse, however.

Wow, I had no idea motorcades have gotten that big. I saw Reagan's motorcade back in 1988 and it was maybe have that size, probably closer to a third.
Nice to see jaded New Yorkers actually excited about something.

Anyway, the Repubs have their panties in a knot over this. OMG, how much money is he spending to take his wife out? They should be happy we have a young president who likes to leave the house once in a while with his wife no less!

I'm a liberal guy, but I have to report my observations honestly -- New Yorkers were always pretty excited when Bush showed up too. And I don't mean "agitated" -- though, sure, there were people who were agitated. But there were always plenty of people excited to see the motorcade. Especially the first time he did it.
I mean, the *President* is in town. Even us America-hating liberals have to stop and think it's cool when the car passes by.
