This Michael Fleming story in Variety is nominally about a western called Unbound Captives, which is set to begin filming at the end of this year with Hugh Jackman, Rachel Weisz and Robert Pattinson in the leads. The heart of the story is about how Madeline Stowe, the once very-hot actress who (no offense) has been pretty much over for the last six or seven years if not longer, not only co-wrote the script but will now direct the feature. Read about her for twice turning down a huge go-away payday and tell me you don't respect that.

Always had a thing for her - she is compelling. Only reasons she might be "over" are probably completely out of her control like many other older talented women in this world.

She was good in 12 Monkeys too. It's the sort of thing where you watch it and wonder where the hell she went (and why Bruce Willis does so few films where he shows he can act when he tries...)

always been a fan of both her and her husband (his series DREAM ON kinda started the ball rolling for HBO original series)...interesting she wrote a period western as they own a cattle ranch in texas...makes me wonder where her affinity for the west comes from....(and after 'bad girls' i'm surprised she'd ever want to do a western again)....

I'm not surprised to hear news of this sort about her as she has always come across in her film roles, interviews, etc. as strong, confident and unwilling to be cowed. But she's not obnoxious or some shallow, banal proud "bitch"; her strength of character is just that, strength, and it has never mitigated her other more conventional feminine qualities. Those things all interact and complement one another, deepening and becoming richer as experiences and qualities of character. There are very few other actresses who have managed that balance as well--Debra Winger for one and look at what happened to her. Regardless, Stowe was and is an excellent talent and we have been poorer for her relative absence. Oh, and to make a point I have made consistently, she and Rickman should have won the Oscars in '91 not Foster/Hopkins. Without a doubt.

Now this is cool news! She was pretty much always great in everything she did, even if the films she appeared in weren't necessarily great. Second the love for her in 12 Monkeys and Revenge. Let's not forget her performances in Blink, Short Cuts, The Last of the Mohicans, and even Stakeout.
I'll miss staring at her hypnotically beautiful form, but really curious to see what she can do behind the camera.
Also hard to believe she's 50 years young! Look out Diane Lane...

Can I just second the mention of Tony Scott's REVENGE? I'll bet the only reason that film hit Blu Ray so quickly was the scene of Kevin Costner finger-banging her while he was driving in his jeep.

Love Ms. Stowe (esp. in 12 Monkeys), agree she's a good actress, but I would've sold the script for the $5M. In '93 Scott was hot after Thelma & Louise and if this film scored too she would've had dozens of offers for her next script. Plus, she could've leveraged her writing skills and her looks to custom-create a star vehicle for herself. Sixteen years is a long time to wait to get your project made. Will she succeed as a writer-director? TBD

Love this IMDB tidbit:
The sex scenes between Kevin Costner and Madeleine Stowe were not rehearsed or choreographed in any way before shooting. Tony Scott simply set up three cameras and allowed the actors to find their way into the scenes. Everything seen during the sex scenes was improvised by the actors themselves. When Costner viewed Scott's director's cut of the movie in 2007 he said of these scenes, 'Boy, we really got into it didn't we'?

I have to admit, I'd love to see RIdley Scott do a western, and Russell Crowe starring in a good western (third time's the charm?), but I do respect her for it, yeah. Of course, now she's got to deliver the goods as a director -- that's got to be a tough first time director gig, doing a western.

I recall being told by a couple of directors (off the record, of course) that Ms. Stowe had gained a reputation for being "difficult" on set. I'm not saying it's true -- just that someone was putting it out there and that's one of the reasons her career became a bit spotty. She was one of several actresses who were unofficially "greylisted" -- others being Debra Winger (who is batshit crazy), Annabella Sciorra and Sharon Stone.
I didn't know whether or not to believe the first guy who told me this ... but when a second director and then a third one mentioned this ... I began to think that something was afoot. Somewhere along the line, these ladies crossed someone.

Let's not go nuts. "The Larry Sanders Show" got that ball rolling; "Dream On" was the "Arliss" of it's day - HBO had ownership & sunk costs so they kept it rolling despite internal numbers that no one watched. (Plus, its producers went on to give us "Friends", so, you know...)
