Envelope columnist Scott Feinberg interviewed Girlfriend Experience star Sasha Grey six and a half days ago -- Thursday, 4.30 -- at the Edie and Lew Wasserman Cinematheque on the Brandeis University campus. It's a fairly intriguing piece. Feinberg is polite and respectful but professionally direct at certain points in the chat. Grey comes off as shrewd, mature, intelligent and -- sorry -- faintly tragic. Because she works in an icky industry filled with untalented and under-educated people, and because no porn star has ever walked away from it intact.
"Early word of Grey's impending visit set the city of Boston abuzz," Feinberg writes, "and -- as we learned via blogs, Twitter, talk radio and newspaper columns -- she is not someone who engenders mild feelings.
"Some said they had never before heard of or seen her; others said they had heard and seen a lot of her. Some said they vehemently disapproved of what she did for a living; others said they couldn't get enough of her work. Some were outraged that a prestigious university would invite her to visit its campus and that a respected publication would want to interview her; others -- especially the 300 students who managed to snag a ticket to the event -- were just plain happy that we did.
"So why did we? Well, to clear things up, for two main reasons: (1) The Girlfriend Experience is a significant film, and (2) Grey is, in her own way, a significant filmmaker."
Has anyone ever watched any of Grey's films? I finally did last weekend, for a bit. As long as I could stand it, I mean. There's really only one word for what I saw -- ugly.
Not to finish on an argumentative note, but why did it take the L.A. Times tecchies six days to post this? Why didn't they have it up the next day or by last weekend, or at least by last Monday? Steven Soderbergh's film has been on-demand since last weekend but it doesn't open until 5.22 so the piece wasn't delayed to coincide with a weekend opening.
I'll tell you why. Because the L.A. Times tecchies are notoriously slow and bureaucratic when it comes to getting things done. (Staffers and freelancers routinely groan and roll their eyes about their shortcomings -- trust me.) And, I suspect, because they prefer not to work on weekends. And when they come to work on Monday it takes them a long while to get rolling. Because they spend huge portions of their work days in meetings.
Web reporting has to turn around within hours, or certainly within a day. The L.A. Times just doesn't get it. They're competing in a 24/7 web world, but they're still behaving in some ways like print.
And why is the video so pixellated and awful looking? Did the guy at Brandeis shoot this on a cell phone? And why do the Times tecchies make it difficult to grab a video embed code? Why do they make you click on "Page Source" and scroll down and scrounge around for the code?
Rewind: After catching The Girlfriend Experience at Sundance on 1.20, I wrote that "it smacks of right-now verite, is smartly written and very well made. (And recently shot also with all kinds of references to the Obama-McCain race and the economic meltdown.)
"No one would call it the stuff of high Shakespearean drama, but I wasn't bored for a second. It's smallish and low-key like Soderbergh's Bubble but set in Manhattan and focusing on a very pretty upscale prostitute and the various men in her life -- boyfriend, journalist, sleazy erotic website editor, high-rollers looking to buy her favors, etc.
"I presume that everyone reading this knows that Soderbergh is far too dry, ironic and circumspect to be a provider of hot sex scenes or even mildly suggestive ones (as in, say, Alan Resnais' Hiroshima Mon Amour). He maintains a cool distance in this regard at all times, which is welcome considering the appearance of Grey's clients. Some of them, I mean. Two or three inspired a prayer from yours truly: 'Please, God, I don't want to see any middle-aged butt cheeks or bloated stomachs or funny-looking feet.'
"Soderbergh frames most of The Girlfriend Experience with static medium and long shots -- there are almost no close-ups. He said during the q & a that the photography in Michelangelo Antonioni's Red Desert was an influence.
"Grey, a real-life porn star, isn't as much of an actress as she could be. Scene after scene requites her to keep it all locked inside, and she's good at that. I hate to say this because it makes me sound small, but it seems fair since Frey is presenting herself as an object of desire: her feet are too big.
"Grey's live-in boyfriend is played by 30 year-old Chris Santos, who delivers reasonably well in a somewhat layered and mildly challenging role.
"I didn't know what the title meant until I looked at The Girlfriend Experience IMDB page. A trivia notes posting says that 'a call girl advertising the provision of a girlfriend experience is implying that she provides deep French kissing, full service intercourse with protection, and oral sex without protection.'
"This reminded me of the services that Ashley Alexandra Dupree allegedly provided (or were sought out by) former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer."

Which Grey porno did you watch, Jeff? Because I would recommend "King of Coochie 4," in which Sasha and the ultra-perky Sunny Lane take on Tom Byron...
I kid.
But seriously...I suppose that I ought to find it somewhat heartening, in this thoroughly Howard-Sternized culture of ours, that so many are still genuinely put off by porn. Although I could certainly do without the barely disguised paternalism and sexism that lurks behind a lot of the complaints. Not you, Jeff. But still. I dunno if I'd insist on perceiving Grey as a tragic figure. It's true there are quite a few lug nuts in her chosen profession, but she's pretty smart and directed. If anyone can make it out of the industry "intact," I'd say she can.
The odds aren't great, but stranger things have happened. WIlliam S. Burroughs never totally renounced heroin, and lived to be 83! So there's that.
And Actionman, while Sasha might take issue with your precise choice of words, I'm sure she'd in some sense concur with your assessment of her sexual, shall we say, Other-ness.

Glenn Kenny -- not that it matters or that you likely care, but for the record, I'm a big fan of porn and not put off by it at all. I think it's a lot of fun to watch. And I definitely think that Sasha's got greak skills in her line of work.
But that doesn't excuse the fact that all porn stars (women AND men) are sexual pigs. And there's nothing wrong wth that, either. They're doing what they want to do. But nobody's got a gun pointed at their heads, forcing them to fuck on camera for money. That's a decision that they made on their own. In my mind, there's no real difference between prostitution and pornograhy. Porn stars just have better publicists.

Check out the excellent profile of Grey in the new issue of Rolling Stone (with Bob Dylan on the cover.) She comes off (imo) like most porn stars: mercurial, reductive, and about as un-erotic as you could imagine.

@actionman, I didn't intend my aside as a rebuke. I'm not down on porn fans at all. As for the line between porn and prostitution, that gets trickier all the time. Are the actors in "Nine Songs" essentially prostitutes? Is Chloe Sevigny? It's an interesting question that arises from the premise. One probably too multi-faceted to get into here.

What exactly is the practical and ethical difference between working in porn and working in professional sports? Many athletes don't make it big and thus make little money and suffer many life altering injuries which might make future employment difficult. Some of them use drugs. Some of them are, were, or would have been criminals. Some of them are in jail right now. So, why, ultimately are porn stars slandered and athletes glorified? Neither job requires good behavior or even average intelligence. Both work only to entertain. Both jobs are impossible to do once you reach a certain age. So, aside from people being uncomfortable with someone who has sex often, what exactly is the difference?

I think pornstars are the most beautiful women in the world. But then again, I have always had a thing for sluts. I feel like I understand them. My dad dated an uniterrupted string of them from the early 80s to the mid 90s, while I was going through adolescence and college. All of them were 25 years old and younger, the youngest being 19, and all of them looked like they could've been in porn. I never found them to be coarse or vulgar. They never talked about sex. They seemed as smart as the girls I went to school with. The only thing that was different about them is that they seemed a touch dangerous, and what I mean by dangerous is that they didn't seem interested in the prescribed notions of what "female" behavior should be. So, in a way, they almost came across as masculine in that they would not be dominated (both socially, personally, emotionally, psychologically, and sexually) unless they wanted to be dominated. It always felt as if they were in control of my dad, who was usually 30 years older than them. And unless they were going out to some obnoxious restaurant, they always dressed very casually and comfortably, in jeans, t-shirts, sweats, etc. I guess what I am trying to say is that I think sluts are cool. And hot. But the hot side is reserved only for those that the sluts deem worthy, and this is where I think it gets tricky, because most guys don't want to think about that. No guy wants to be rejected by a slut. You think to yourself, She'll fuck him and him and him, but she won't fuck me? It doesn't seem fair. But at least we have porn, where you can see what you will never have. My dad was dating a 19 year old girl from Orange County. She was a dead ringer for Aurora Snow, who was kind of a big deal in the porn world at the turn of the century. Anyway, her and my dad had a tempestuous relationship, always fighting about who knows what. I think she was seeing other men, something that bothered my dad, even though he understood, she being 19 and smoking hot. Well, now I'm just rambling. My point is this: I am the type of man who would marry a pornstar and be fine with her going off every day to get railed by some monkey with a huge dick. As long as she came home to me every night and let me snuggle her. I would always tell her that I love her, no matter what. Because I think that's what sluts need to hear. That they are loved.

I have a question, MilkMan, and this seems as good a time as any to ask it. When I was in college, my buddies and I saw a few films with an up-and-coming (pardon the pun) star named Peter North, who had a, shall we say, unique talent.
The industry being what it was back then, Mr. North was seldom identified in the credits of these films. So we nicknamed him, and I swear I'm not making this up, the Milk Man (because he delivered quarts). So my question is, in light of your affinity for such entertainments, is your nom de internet a similar homage?

No. I could explain why I chose this name, but it would take way too long. It involves my mom, and a milkman, the guy who delivered cold gallons of the stuff to our doorstep when I was a little kid, which I think was around the end of the time when you could have milk delivered to your doorstep.
Peter North has always kind of creeped me out. I feel like the only reason he got into porn was to showcase his singular talent, as opposed to just getting into porn in order to have sex with hot young girls, which I think is the main reason for most of those dudes. There is just something off about Peter North to me. Always has been. Never liked watching his work, regardless of the female talent involved.

A very good friend of mine commited suicide last year. He mentioned to me, in the weeks before, how he was depressed all of the time. I said, sarcastically, maybe you need to "jerk-off" more. He laughed, lightening the moment. He then confided something in my I will never forget. "I haven't been feeling like it...porn depresses me more." I just listened to him. "Unless the 'Olsen twins' are getting filled out like a form, I don't even care..." He also mentioned that he needed porn to even start feeling turned-on, even if he was with a naked female.
That my friends is being fully desensitized.

fine and get out very well from porn because she's doing Fear Factor The Sex Edition while simultaneously putting down the free stuff for the little people with the compassion of an ass master. The devil's in the details, of which she gives none, except that soon, she'll have
her own line out. There, that's her plan.

Because the publications and the journalists can't deal with the reality and don't know how to report or write about it.
Sasha Grey is a self promotion super star, and her acting in GFE is not an unmitigated success (from Brian Orndorf) and OMG, he actually names two prior works by title, that's earth shattering:

Actually, I considered blogging about Sasha and her work in "Throat," the recent Paul-Thomas-directed quasi-remake of "Deep Throat," but as I'm actually getting money to profile Sasha for another website, I figured it would be overkill of a sort. To try and satisfy Holly's demands somewhat, I'll say that I've wwtched a bit of Sasha's porn work; not a whole lot, but a fair amount. And you know what? Doesn't really bother me. Different strokes for different folks, as they say. I know you're trying to bait me (and now Scott) with the expectation that once we've seen all the awful stuff Sasha does in pictures, the scales will fall from our eyes and we'll go out and rescue her or some such thing, so let me save you some time and effort and tell you it's not gonna fucking happen. Nothing Sasha's involved herself with, despite how gross some of it sounds, is even a tenth as degrading as your typical Max Hardcore exploitation, all right?
And incidentally, as for the "fat man" bit, I've dropped 20 pounds since shooting "Girlfriend Experience," and aim to drop at least 30 more by August. So you won't have THAT line of bullshit in your puny arsenal anymore, either.
