Which of These?
If you were casting around for an actor to play a good-time 30something guy with a beard, a barrel chest and a wisecracking mouth, would you go with The Hangover's Zach Galifianakis or Humpday's Joshua Leonard? Appearance-wise the differences are mainly about weight (Galifianakis is bulkier) and hair color (Leonard's hair is blondish). Is the Galifianakis similarity the reason Leonard's beard was shaved off for the Humpday release poster?

I don't know. Zach looks like a healthy, happy, sloppy guy. Leonard looks like he's been held hostage by the Blair Witch for the last decade.

I think a lot of people will walk into The Hangover thinking that's Joaquin Phoenix. If anything, hopefully the movie will vault Zach into mainstream consciousness, where he deserves to be.

The truth is probably a lot simpler: Leonard probably grew out of his "beard phase" after production and shaved it. Existing production photos didn't do it for Magnolia, so they ordered up a fresh promo shoot and Leonard only had a week to regrow something on his now cleanshaven face.
Because I would imagine Magnolia would love for some clueless types to confuse him for the guy from the upcoming non-sleeper hit THE HANGOVER.

As I recall, the exact same scenario occurred back when CHASING AMY's poster was designed -- three of the four male actors on the poster (Affleck, Jason Lee, and Kevin Smith) wore beards in the flick, meaning that Affleck was forced to "shave" his off by the jumpy studio:
