An absurd-sounding story by The Wrap's Sharon Waxman and Amy Kaufman appeared early this afternoon, claiming that Nikki Finke was paid $14 million for Deadline Hollywood Daily. If this turns out to be real (or even two-thirds or one-half real), the person who approved the deal would have to be called an idiot.
If I was a prospective buyer I would think twice about paying Finke $1.4 million for her site. If Finke ever leaves her house (I've heard she rarely does this) and gets hit by a car like Shelley Winters in Lolita, DHD would be worth absolutely nothing -- zilch.
Waxman/Kaufman have written that a knowledgeable source said the $14 million "would be paid out over several years" and that "normally such deals are tied to traffic or to revenue projections...nonetheless, it is an exceedingly high price for a relatively small website."

It's quite a boring website too.
Credit to Finke tho - you'd be a moron to turn that amount of cash down.

They've pulled the story now. Makes me wonder if the $14 million number was grossly inaccurate.

Crazy I know, but for I actually hate Waxman more than Finke. Nikki is simply a lunatic. Waxman thinks she knows it all when she really knows less than 95 percent of the town.

Wow... only 5500 a day? My two-bit blog gets around 300 hits a day. Does that mean I can sell it for $76,000? Any takers? Anyone?

Scott-that's a fact -according to Quantcast the site gets around 5500 hits a day. She has made a big name for herself and personally if you like inside stuff she's quite good. I just can't believe that $14 million dollar number. It seems insane.
Actually Scott-your a real good writer and 300 hits a day is respectable and certainly something to build on. The bigger movie blogs like Slashfilm and Ainticool get 10,000 a day.

I have no idea what her site is worth. But how many hits she get isn't the point--the question is how many hits she will be able to generate with a bigger media company pushing her. Is there interest in the general public for this kind of inside hollywood stuff? If there is, no one generates it like she does. I mean, she gets virtually every scoop. And with her you get the whole deal--there's virtually no operational cost. So $14 mill? Maybe.

I wonder when Harry will sell AICN. They hardly update it anyway and the scoops dried up years ago. He ought to get rid while he can because it's really just links to other websites now, so the brand name it built for itself is diminishing all the time.

Waxman's "grilling" reads like a testy "I didn't want to take this call." Which is fine, given they hate each other.
But how does somebody who gets 5500 hits a day reach 65 million page views that quickly? Nikki's always bragging about that and it's always smelled. Where's the MATH diligence, here?

Well, I'm sure the buyer had a look at her revenue books. You just don't buy a business or website unless you see the revenue stream. They must have other plans for the site to pay that much.
