Evil Is Banal

Conservative columnist and opportunist S.E. Cupp, a contributor to Politico and the Washington Post, tells Sean Hannity that President Obama is to blame for David Letterman's Sarah Palin routine the night before last. "I'm not saying this to be inflammatory," she said, "[but] I blame Barack Obama...he allowed his surrogates to talk this way."

"Allowed"? Marching in absolute uniform lockstep is a right-wing thing. Liberals wake up in the morning and decide what they're going to say and do on their own. They don't take orders or sing to the media from pre-prepared hymns.

Okay so let me make sure I got this striaght:

Sarah Palin says Obama "pals around with terrorists," her husband is a member --oops, I mean FORMER member (allegedly!)-- of an all-white separatist group.
Palin is trying to incite already unstable reactionaries by telling them the country is falling into the iron grip of totalitarian socialists.

And now we've gotten two violent acts by right wingnuts who sound just like their political idols such as Palin.

And what's the big new story?

How sorry we need to feel for Palin because Letterman told a wry joke or two about her little brat.
No mention of whether Palin will aplogize for how her rhetoric has emboldened nuts like that Brun moron.

The party of no ideas realizes their on a sinking ship. The old "Keep 'em on the defensive by feigning offense non-stop" won't fly anymore.
Palin's a whackjob and she oughta get over it.

What baffles me is that the Republican Party is, for argument's sake, a non-entity. The executive and legislative branches are controlled by the Democrats, and the face of the supreme court will slowly be taking form...yet the left can not stop obsessing over the right. The downfall. The missteps. How to resurrect....it goes on and on. We all know the opposite of love is not hate, but indifference. So why so much hate? Why are so many so afraid of the right? Why not just let the right stew in its own insignificance. Is it that there is deep uncertainty about the course down which we are headed, leveraging our future to bandage today;s wounds? Enough unrest from the right will reveal this to the nation?

What? What is it?

Don't pretend like the right is a "non-entity" because of two down election cycles, and don't pretend like it isn't prudent to try to stay a step ahead of one's political opponents. Palin is an embarrassingly under-educated down-home politician who needs to stay in the lime light while she decides whether to run again in 3 years or syndicate a talk show sooner instead.

Anyone (Fox News, blogs, etc) who keeps this story going is doing it because it the easiest way to keep the rubes tuned in so you can sell ad space.

Who was talking about conservatives here? I thought this was a conservative talking about Obama. As for the "attack, attack, attack"...have you not been listening to Limbaugh and Gingrich and Hannity and Beck?

All the Republicans do these days is attack, as their own party is falling apart.

C'mon Spin Dr. Massey. You can do better than that. Stay on point.

"Well, you're doing a stellar job so far. Remember the promises Obama made? His stimulus was going to create 4 million new jobs and stop the unemployment rate at 8%."

It took Bush eight years (although he didn't really need all eight to do it) to destroy this country from within. Yet you give Obama four and a half months to fix it.

Interesting.

I used to work a job where I was one of the managers, but the two managers above me had pretty much called it a day, effort wise. The place was falling apart, the staff gave a half assed effort, and things did not look good. This went on before I had been there, at least a couple of years from what I gathered.

A new GM was hired, he fired a bunch of people, eventually that place became a lot better. It didn't happen in a few months.

Whoa, wait, I'm far from conservative. I'm just tired of the everyone on the left being preoccupied with the right, mostly because the only thing stopping us from moving forward is the compulsion by many on the left keep picking at the scab. Just leave it alone.

One can use the nouns "left," "right," or "liberal" or "conservative" while identifying with any of them (or none of them). It's about keeping an argument clear and concise within the constraints of a 100 word argument. I say "liberal" and then "you" not because I'm a republican but because my idea of liberalism doesn't include an obsession with your opponents, while it feels like a very large segment of the left wants to dwell in the right. I don't identify with that.

Regardless, so far Gordie has been the only voice of reason. Blue, red, bullshit, the common thread is intolerance.

Letterman is a COMEDIAN, he tells JOKES. Is Sarah Palin even aware of his profession? This is what he does to political figures, movie stars, and celebrities that are PUBLIC FIGURES.

She had her chance to stay outta the limelight, but when she put herself (AND her family) on center stage for the '08 election she opened up the door for public scrutiny and humor at her expense. There's no going back now, baby. It's not like she has even tried to disappear since then, either...her life is basically a really bad media soap opera forcefully unfolding before all of our eyes.

This is all quite silly, and I'd personally find it all a lot more amusing if the person in question wasn't interested in running for one of the two highest offices in the country four years from now. Anyone who "likes" Sarah -- or even considered casting a vote for her last year -- I implore you to remember this behavior (and undoubtedly plenty more of it in the coming year or two).

It is petty, but more importantly, it shows a fundamental and complete lack of understanding of some of the very basic principles this country was founded on.

Palin is still bitter since it was Letterman that screwed the McCain-Palin ticket when he exposed McCain as a guy who wasn't even close to straight talk as he lied about why he had to blow off Letterman.

The jokes aren't nearly that offensive. But Palin has to make herself a victim so she can raise fast cash for her 2012 campaign. Does anyone remember any of Dave's jokes from last week? They're yesterday's fish wrappers. But Palin can't let it die - mainly cause she does look like a slutty stewardess.

And she completely steps over the line with her campaign to paint Letterman as a child molester.
