Headaches & Complications

The other day I mentioned the classic character arc known as the Three D's -- desire, deception, discovery. Comedies with moral underpinnings are mostly out the window these days, but The Proposal, which snuck last weekend, seems to adhere to the Three D structure. The main character resorting to elaborate subterfuge to obtain temporary satisfaction, grappling with a moral-ethical quandary as a result, and finally coming to a resolve that puts an end to the bullshit. Surely some HE readers saw it last weekend. Verdict?

Sandra Bullock is even lower on my 'no-talent' totem pole than Kate Hudson is.

She was somewhat appealing in 2 movies! That's it! And it was 15+ years ago to boot. Who's her agent? I want a career in movies!

I thought Bullock was Jack Lemmon and Ryan Reynolds is Shirley MacLaine. Well, not precisely but something vaguely like that. You're saying that I'm giving The Proposal too much credit -- I get that. But chops and charm and comic expertise aside, I was wondering if the structure, at least, adheres to the classic Three D scheme.

Less sucky than Bullock's last five, ten movies? But whatever her limitations, she ain't working for Billy Wilder, either.

Saw this at the screening from hell last night - talkers, all kinds of irritations. Maybe that put me in a bad mood but this one did nothing for me. Getting tired of Betty White's old eccentric cute schtick as well.

Rockport, MA standing in for Alaska - talk about misplaced mountain ranges....

Saw this weeks ago at an advanced screening in Philly. It's not totally terrible, but that's not high praise. The whole thing reminded me of the type of movie my grandmother and her old bitty buddies will enjoy on their weekly night at the movies.

For what it's worth, Bullock and Reynolds do elevate the material because of their sheer likability, but there isn't much to elevate.

The 3 Ds, by the way, are all sort of present, but they often are in bad films, just as in good ones.

How come people attacked Knocked Up because it was inconceivable that a good looking chick would hook up with a flat shlub, and yet no one complains about the improbability of Bullock's character NOT being attracted to Renolds?

why not? Not all ladies are attracted to Ryan Reynolds. I think he's hot and if he makes a move on me, wellll let's just say I'll reciprocate... but there are other guys who I find way more sexier (and make me cream in my panties).

I, personally, find Seth Rogen to be very un-attractive...

Uh, surly crowd of commenters here, Jeff. (Sorry, Glenn. Love ya, but c'mon.)

The is a rom-com with some "com" that generates genuinely big laughs at least a few times. That puts it way ahead of most recent rom-coms. The chemistry between Bullock and Reynolds is key to the film, and I confess that although both stars are likable, I didn't ultimately buy the romance. It develops late in the film and never seemed justified to me. The high-school/college sweetheart was just window dressing, not much of a wrench in the main plan for the two leads to get together.

But the positives are pretty strong: a few big laughs, a star-making breakout performance by Reynolds (who, honestly, I thought was playing his part as a gay guy for a while, until the movie quashed that idea), and -- sexist comment alert!! -- Bullock showing more of herself than I've ever seen before. She's modest in the bust, of course, which is fine with me, and she's *spectacular* everywhere else, particularly her legs. A scene of her and Reynolds falling on top of each other is predictable but works wonderfully, as does a scene where Reynolds climbs in bed with Bullock in order to play the "engaged couple" in front of the bride-to-be's mother. Her suprised reaction, and his explanation for his, umm, morning condition, is priceless.

And then there's Oscar Nunez, who nearly steals the movie.

This one should be right up Jeffrey's alley. :)

Discman, the two scenes you say are great i've seen about 93 times in the trailers.

Saw it last night with a screening crowd. Laughter throughout. I liked it, old fashioned rom com. Bullock is supposedly 45, but looks late 30s and very svelte. It goes down easy. Don't put too much analysis behind it; and Bette White steals the movie. She was just right for the part.

Ryansi51: Thanks. I'm afraid that I don't see many ads, or even previews (don't seek them out online). Therefore, the scenes were fresh to me, but I suspect others will share your reaction.

Still: The erection scene is in the previews? Green-band?
