Recap

I finally got around to reading Steven Zaillian's 12.1.08 draft of Moneyball, or a portion of it. And I can kinda see why a producer-manager friend passed along word about it being "terrific, and why Brad Pitt signed on. But the entire Sony staff, Amy Pascal included, was shocked to read the new script which had been substantially rewritten -- a whole different movie." Again, if anyone can please send along the Pascal freak-out draft, I'll read both and run a comparison piece.

I was crushed when I read this was cancelled yesterday...there was no movie I was more excited for. Huge baseball fan, love Pitt and Soderbergh. This is one of the most important sports books ever written and deals with a really fascinating revolution that has taken place in baseball in the past decade or so. The interviews Soderbergh gave about his plans for the project, his commitment to a new standard for realism in a sports movie, had me drooling. I really think this had a chance to be one of my favorite movies of all time. I was in a bad mood all day after it got cancelled. PLEASE let this project somehow still be made. Thanks a lot for posting the script, Jeff.

Wow, you're comfortable posting a screenplay for download? Was this sanctioned? How is this possibly kosher?

Too bad they can't convert it to a documentary and build up an audience for the story...

I read the script and bookmarked the location, but now I see it's been taken down. Would someone mind sending me a copy of the pdf? I thought it was pretty good. I appreciate the assistance... if you can send it, pls email to myersb68@gmail.com

Zaillian's script was full of so many egregious mistakes...one of which was having Billy Beene in bed with a different chick in every scene..when he's been happily married for 10 years. Billy and his wife could have totally sued...Zaillian got paid 3 million to write a draft in 3 weeks...so I guess he's smarter than all of us to pull that off. Soderbergh's script was great...approved by Major League Baseball (not Zaillian's) and approved by the film's star, Brad Pitt. Brad Pitt DID NOT HAVE A DEAL to make this movie before Soderbergh signed on...he was ATTACHED BUT NOT COMMITTED..he only signed to star because of Soderbergh.

I can't speak to Beene's personal life but the baseball facts presented in Zaillian's script are all accurate. I read the script with Baseball-Reference.com and ESPN.com open to check.

I have no idea what Soderbergh changed in his draft, but as a life long baseball fan I think Zaillian's 12.1.2008 draft is great. It would certainly be the most authentic movie ever made about MLB.
