In the wake of last night's pained and needlessly solemn apology from David Letterman -- the previous "apology" was funnier, more than sufficient and a lot more honest -- will the Palin-supporting asshats call off their scheduled demonstration, slated to happen at 4:30 today in front of the Ed Sullivan theatre? The Palins and their ilk -- politically prehistoric, nakedly scheming embodiments of backwater hypocrisy, smallmindedness and earth-plundering selfishness -- have no shame, let alone grace or class. If by clapping my hands three times....
Update: Sarah Palin has issued a statement accepting Letterman's apology.

Sarah Palin is the white middle-class female version of Al Sharpton. She is an opportunist and a sham artist, feigning outrage for self-promotion. Her small minority of supporters are shameless and pathetic since they don't realize (or don't care) that they are being used by the Palin's to promote themselves even at the expense of exploiting one of their children.
Sarah and Todd Palin know full well that Letterman wasn't talking about their 14 year old daughter, but they don't care. No one does crocodile tears like the Palin's. This is all about getting that wretched woman free publicity and nothing more. Even if its done at the expense of attracting negative (and embarrassing) attention towards their minor daughter. The very one they are so anxiously trying to "protect." But then again this was the same woman who exploited her own son with downs syndrome for sympathy votes among the pro-lifers.
Honestly, next to Cheney, she is the most vile person in American politics today. She should stop trying to pick fights with media personailites and try to come up with concrete ways to help people.
I'm sure her retarded supporters will accuse me of being a sexist now.

She had stretched a one day story into a week, and will, most likely, turn this into one of the tentpoles of her upcoming "presidential" campaign. God save the nation.

I dont have a big problem with the joke, what i do have a problem with is something like this from the conservative side aimed at liberals (esp. barack) is considered "hate speech"

I'll defend Al Sharpton, against my better judgment, because I was wrong about one of the big things I criticized him for. Back in 1989, he made a big show out of walking up to the suspects in the 'Central Park Jogger' case and shaking their hands. At the time, I thought it was wrongheaded and inflammatory. But, low and behold, in 2002, it turns out the kids were probably innocent and he was right all along.

Of course the real issue here is the long, slow death of humor in America. Scatological jokes are out, because they might offend the moral majority, ethnic and minority jokes are out, because they offend the liberals, and sooner or later even pratfalls will be dangerous to perform, for fear of someone's kid imitating it and getting injured.
Plus we're now living in some kind of post ironic age where the only way to satirize people like Bush and Cheney would be to make them appear intelligent and human.
We're getting near the end, folks.

'NEW YORK (AP) - Sarah Palin says she accepts David Letterman's apology for the joke about her daughter. The Alaska governor, in a statement issued Tuesday, said the apology was accepted "on behalf of all young women, like my daughters, who hope men who `joke' about public displays of sexual exploitation of girls will soon evolve."'
Evolve? EVOLVE?! You don't even believe in evolution, you silly, shameless, hypocritical IDIOT. So, Letterman should be tarred and feathered for making a mediocre joke, but you should skate completely on firing up your campaign crowds with ugly rhetoric about palling around with terrorists and using President Obama's middle name like a fucking sword with that smug, idiot's smile on your stupid face - even after we've seen the results of firing up hateful right-wingers with doomsday rhetoric in the past two weeks. No, I say you shouldn't skate on that Sarah. I say that since you made such a stink over Letterman just to keep your idiotic mug in the news, maybe we should talk a little about YOUR rhetoric and about YOUR responsibility, not to the "young women everywhere" that you are allegedly defending, but to EVERYONE ELSE who appreciates true tolerance and true citizenship, not the twisted, selfish, greedy, jingoistic and hatefully ignorant brand of citizenship you tried to foist over on us during your campaign. Wink, wink IDIOT.

Okay, here goes.....
(I guess somebody has to offer something contrary to the party line here.....)
First, let's play a game here. If you respond to my post, see if you can do it WITHOUT using the words "Hannity", "Coulter", "Rush", "Limbaugh", "Beck", "O'Reilly", "Cheney", "Halliburton", "Fox" and or "Bush". Nor mentioning my "love" for the above mentioned people. Eh? Good luck!
Also, I don't defend Palin or her crass over-exploitation of this joke. It was a joke. Perhaps in poor taste but still a joke. And finally, I can't imagine ever voting for Mrs. Palin. She's too conservative for me and I disagree on too many issues to ever really support her.
That being said....
Okay, first of all, we talk about Palin's lack of grace and class by showing a clip from "Countdown with Keith 'For The Love of All Things Holy, Watch My Fucking Show, I'm Maxing Out On Phony, Red-Faced Outrage' Olbermann"? He's all class!
Second, I'm getting a little tired of hearing over and over how Palin's kids deserve any shit they get because "Sarah trotted them out, so they're fair game". "Trotted them out"? She was the VP candidate. She has a family. Was she supposed to lock them in the basement for the duration of the campaign? She didn't "trot them out" any more than Obama trotted out his daughters. And yet none of you, (hopefully), nor myself would tolerate hearing people crack jokes about them. Kids of politicians are supposed to by off-limits. (yeah, I know, Rush said mean things about Chelsea, and he was a dick for doing it, so save your breath)
Be honest. It's not that she supposedly paraded her kids in public, it's because it's Sarah Palin and different rules apply. There are no limits.
Finally.... "pathetic", "wretched woman", "retarded supporters", "pathetic media whore and a total mental midget", and of course, my favorite, "stupid cunt".... If those words were used by a right wing radio host towards any democrat would any of you be calling it "hate speech"?
You'll say no, but we all know it's yes.
"stupid cunt"..... really?

It's all manufactured outrage -- all of it -- all in the name of ratings on both sides of the political spectrum. Rush, Sean, Keith, Rachel and the rest need the ratings so their networks can bring in the ad revenue, so their respective shows can stay on air. HuffPost, Drudge, DailyKOS need the hits to their websites. Palin needs to keep in the spotlight, lest she return to where she was a year ago -- the little-known Governor of one of the least populated states in the union. They all did very well this past election cycle and have to keep eyes glued to their respective screens until the 2010 cycle starts up. But they need to keep cash in the till to make it that long.

Travis,
I don't think Piper is fair game, but I absolutely think Bristol is, and here's why: she has embraced the media when it suits her, i.e. TV interviews, US Weekly covers, and her new self-embraced role as teen ambassador for abstinence. This infuriates me to no end because - hello - abstinence DIDN'T work very well for her, now did it? I truly believe that Letterman and his staff were talking about Bristol because, well, she is the only one anyone has EVER joked about and she is the one who has very publicly been knocked up. The truth is though, in that family, and with abstinence as the only "preventive" measure, Piper probably WILL be pregnant in the next few years. Wonder if anyone will care to bring up this sad, ridiculous sham then?
Of course, Palin jumped on Letterman's mistake, like the cold-blooded political beast she is, and squeezed every last bit of intellectually dishonest outrage out of it, because she knows her supporters will follow her every move with anger multiplied by ten. She saw how easy it was to rile them up during the campaign, saw how, with a couple of winks and shrill pronouncements, she could get these people ready for war. So she had a little test skirmish with David Letterman. I'm sure she is awfully proud of herself right now and is planning how to use this new found power to win the next election or take over the galaxy or capture the All-Spark, but whatever she is doing, I hope more intelligent people start speaking out against her faux-brand of truth and fairness. Because she very intentionally doesn't have a clue.

What's the next 'outrage'? A PG-13 billboard in Soho?
CBS obviously put a gun to Dave's head to get that apology out of him, and, unfortunately, the economic situation is going to force the consolidation of more media companies together, so that eventually there's only one or two and the threat of a boycott will finally put the kibash on free speech in this country once and for all.
Can't wait.

Also, the media business is driven by ratings and ad revenue (duh), and there's only 2 ways that I know to draw big ratings. One, produce original creative content (usually humorous, since it's the cheapest to produce and draws the biggest audience) or Two, manufacture controversy, which is boring and pandering but very effective.
But can anyone tell me why all the funny creative people seem to be aligned with the so-called left and the boring, self-righteous blowhards are on the right?
Why has there never been a funny conservative? Seems like it would do wonders for their image.

Fair game for jokes, just like everyone else who basks in the light of the media when it is in their favor. Two points on Chelsea Clinton: 1) As you previously acknowledged she was raked over the coals mercilessly by right-wing pundits for 8 years. No one on the right gave a shit about the self-esteem of that young girl, but luckily (or perhaps just through good parenting), she made it through the gauntlet just fine. 2) I would argue that Chelsea and Bristol are not really similar cases. Yes, they are both children of famous politicians, but Chelsea didn't get pregnant at 17, didn't take on the role of teen abstinence spokesperson and didn't volunteer for media exposure like Bristol has. The fact is, no one would even know who Bristol was if she didn't get pregnant while using abstinence as birth control and then turn around and loudly preach abstinence to any open microphone. When people are thrust into the media by no action of their own, they have a choice...to pull back and ask for their privacy, or push forward and bask in the limelight. Once they choose to bask in the limelight, they are fair game for late night comedian's jokes, just like anyone else in the media.

Interesting question. There have been a few; Dennis Miller and David Zucker jump to mind immediately, but what also jumps to mind is the fact that they were both late converts to conservatism and both seemed to get less funny when they made their conversion. I realize that this perception could entirely be due to my own bias but seriously - watch Airplane and Scary Movie 4 back to back and tell me the liberal Zucker wasn't a hell of a lot funnier than the conservative one. Same principle applies to Miller's pre-9/11 stand-up and his post-9/11 shtick.

Maybe it's my experience living in Orlando during that time and listening to a local conservative talk radio host that used to revel in telling Hillary and Chelsea jokes. Between that, Rush Limbaugh's calling her a dog and McCain's "Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?" I guess maybe it just seems like she was raked over the coals mercilessly for 8 years. But compared to other Presidential progeny, she certainly took the most abuse, wouldn't you say?

And Ghost, there have been plenty of presidential kids to take unwarranted heat - in my lifetime, Amy Carter, Ron Reagan (a ballet dancer, for Christ's sake), Chelsea Clinton and most recently, Jenna Bush (Barbara seemed to escape most of it).
Yes, some idiots made a couple boneheaded comments about Chelsea, but to claim it was prolonged and constant is simply not true. If anything, after the first couple controversies (again, most famously Chris Farley), nobody said a word about her.

And you know what? In a country of 300 million people you're going to hear shit about shit any day of the week. That doesn't mean it's conventional thinking. "I heard a guy from Buffalo call up the Sean Hannity show and call Obama a Marxist" is is a little thin to be saying "conservatives are going around calling Obama a Marxist."
