Stooge Scramble

With Sean Penn's departure from the Farrelly Bros. Three Stooges film, the Farrelly's naturally want to hold onto Jim Carrey and Benicio Del Toro as well as the locked-in release date for their potential tentpoler. Potential Larry replacements, I'm told, include Paul Giamatti, Adrien Brody, Simon Pegg, Zach Galifianakis and -- believe it -- Larry David.

Is this supposed to be a bio-pic, like the one that was on ABC about nine years ago ? If the term "potential tentpoler" implies that the Farrelly Brothers will be attempting to revive the Three Stooges movies from way back in the day, I can't really see them working now. The "Airplane" producers ahd a go at a Stooges/Marx Brothers style comedy with "Brain Donors," and that was not very sucessful, even though I found it a hoot. I think that Giamatti would make a "fine" Larry.

They're making a feature length Three Stooges film. Maybe they can go with the Shemp of acting - Ben Kingsley.

Even though I don't think he's at all right for it, I'd love to see Galifianakis in as many high profile films as possible. He didn't have a lot to work with in The Hangover, and he needs to be recognized as one of the greats.

I thought Sean Penn was stunt casting anyway. Giamatti I can see, but I don't think he'd be game, and Brody would be the perfect straight man, but I can't see him bringing many actual laughs.

Interesting project.

Maybe if this "new" Stooge film is a hit, there will be renewed interest in the team of Sammy Petrillo & Duke Mitchell.

Any renewed interest in Sammy & Duke will be met by the lawyers of Jerry and Dino's estate

Does anyone remember Larry David playing Larry in the Stooges sketches on the old late night show "Fridays"?

He's way too old now though..

Mike, I do remember Larry as Larry on the (very) old ABC late night show "Fridays," which was something like, yikes, thirty years ago.

Sean Penn would of been perfect as Larry. At the same time I don't see this film having the potential to be very good or even financially viable. Reminds a little of Man on the Moon, the Andy Kaufman biopic which was a decent film (mainly because of Foreman's direction and a spot on performance by Carrey).

It should ALWAYS have been David as Larry. I remember reading Sam Raimi saying that he offered David a part in one of the Spider-mans, but David said no because he didn't want to be away from his family. Now that he's divorced and his kids are a little older, he'll come around to the idea.

Giamatti would be aces as well.

This thing is a flop waiting to happen. The Farrelly Brothers peaked with "Mary" and have been going downhill since. They need to take a break and then come back with a movie not about Hollywood.

Of course there's still interest....Sony is selling all the complete Stooges shorts on DVD and they're doing well.

I will always love Shemp. Hold hands you lovebirds!

I can't get over Benicio being cast. Not seeing him as a Stooge.
