"In the wake of David Letterman's apology for his joke last week about Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's daughter, a number of protesters flocked around the Late Show studios in Midtown Manhattan late Tuesday afternoon (June 16) to show their support for Palin -- albeit not in the numbers previously expected," reports MTV News' Jett Wells.

"Approximately three dozen protestors stood across the street from the studios, chanting "Dave Must Go! Fire Dave! Shame on CBS!," and spoke about Letterman's joke, for which he has twice apologized with Palin accepting his second mea culpa a day or so ago.

"Last week, Letterman joked in his monologue about an 'awkward moment' for Palin at a New York Yankees game, when "her daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez." Letterman did not refer to the daughter by name, though he later claimed he was referring to 18-year-old unwed mother Bristol, not 14-year-old Willow, who actually accompanied her mother to the game.

"'It's a disgrace what's going on in our country today,'said a protestor named Ellen. 'We wouldn't do that to Obama's daughters.'

"Before Palin accepted the apology, it was rumored that nearly 2,000 people would protest outside the em>Late Show studios Tuesday. Some of the Palin supporters who did show up, like Robert Gretczko, said they didn't think Letterman's apology was good enough.

"'It doesn't matter,' Gretczko said. 'Don Imus was still fired for his comments.'"

From what I've read, there were more media people at this thing than protesters. CNN has the turnout at closer to 15 than 30.

He never should've appologized. These clowns were going to protest anyway, and people who are GENUINELY offended on behalf of the Palins arent's watching his show anyway. All he's done is hand a HUGE public relations victory to one of the biggest blights on American politics since Quayle.

Dave Letterman shouldn't be fired and this whole thing is being blown out of proportion. I do though enjoy seeing Letterman cower a bit. I see this as being partial payback for his going political and treating McCain like dogshit last year.

John McCain deserved to be treated like dogshit. And I don't think that Dave was "cowering," really. He got the ball and ran with it. Did anyone notice that after Dave's "apology" on the June 15th show, the band went to commercial playing "Fooled Around & Fell In Love." That made me smile.

I fucking can't stand Sarah Palin (although assuring McCain would lose helps me deal with her). That said, however:

But I can imagine very easily that she wakes up the morning after attending the game with her 14 year old daughter and has someone call her up & repeat the "knocked up by A-Rod" joke. The gut-punch of that must be only imaginable to others with daughters (I seem to be the only one here). If you can't, then you really have a cartoon villain mentality about how the world works.

You know what's interesting, is that in all the vitriol and rehashing about her comments during the campaign, no one has claimed that she took potshots at Obama's kids. Had she done so, then yeah her own daughters are fair game for crude comments.

Dave fucked up, has finally realized the scope of his fuck-up and now maybe we can move the fuck on...

Letterman handled the whole thing beautifully on his show last night. A staff writer appeared with a "Fire Letterman" sign behind the host only to be re-directed across the street. Then Dave did a Top10 list of things overheard at the Fire David Letterman rally. supposedly by the show's infiltrating spies.

Seriously, anyone who's a Democrat should think all this attention focused on Sarah Palin is wonderful. She's an idiot and a blight on the Republican party. It's just that everyone hasn't figured this out yet -- especially not Palin. The "liberal" media certainly *does* seem to have figured this out and have been feeding her length after length of rope since the election.

The longer she's around, the longer it's going to take Republicans to stage a serious comeback, because she ain't it.

Don't get me wrong, that may actually happen (I don't follow it). But if it does, it's automatically irrelevant. His job entails being a political pundit/commentator just like Dave's entails being a comedian.

Yeah, and exaggeration is the Second Highest Form of Patriotism. I am a huge admirer of dissent. Always have been, always will be.
