Black-and-White Minds

The snivelling contempt that World War II-generation news writers felt for rock music icons like Jimi Hendrix ("It's not known if he saved his money...") back in the late '60s and early '70s is fairly apparent in this clip. What a wee man Frank Reynolds seems to have been. (Thanks to HE reader Travis Crabtree.)

Did Frank Reynolds seriously have a scratch in his throat at the precise moment between "flail his" and "guitar'?

And "acid rock". That's what my dad called it.

(thanks for the tip)

Sorry Wells, but I think it's interesting and revealing how you just spent several paragraphs ranting about what a waste of space Michael Jackson was, but you can't stomach another journalist implying the same thing about Hendrix. Do you see the paradox there?

Network news has always treated show biz and the arts superficially. When Buddy Holly was killed, the CBS report I saw emphasized the demise of the Big Bopper, having no idea who the three victims were. When Nabokov, one of the biggest geniuses of the century, died, NBC gave him two sentences with no picture. I'm surprised ABC gave Hendrix this much attention.

they say "He died at 28" ... actually he was 27, ABC. All the big rock stars die at 27 ... Joplin, Morrison, Cobain

No Abbey, Jeff's snivelling contempt is totally different. Jimi lived a fine, upstanding life. A true, moral beacon for others who wish to fullfill the promise of heroin addiction and statutory rape. Michael Jackson was weird and possibly amoral.

How nice would it be if the entire Jackson media coverage was limited to a minute and 46 seconds?

I was pretty much okay with the contempt of establishment figures. I bet Frank thought Dean Martin was cool...he was a pretty decent journalist, though.

Frank's on-air breakdown during the Reagan assassination attempt shows true "flailing."

This clip truly shows how much the young create the future culture. These days, if you feign ignorance about such a great as Jimi Hendrix, you're deemed a moron, but then, he was an acid rock musician making unusual sounds.

berg: Shouldn't it be "killed" in Cobain's case...?

Here's a test of whether this is the real D.Z.:

Who killed Kurt, Courtney or Reagan?
