HE reader Ray Ciscon has passed along an article on a US Army-related website in which The Hurt Locker is discussed. Some commenters voice relatively minor realism and credibility issues with the portrayal of U.S. soldiers (particularly Sgt. James) in the film. A persistent theme throughout the article is that a good percentage enjoyed it and would in fact recommend it to others.

My dad was EOD in Vietnam; he earned the Bronze star for his service over there. He also was the head of the US Army's Bomb Disposal unit in Berlin during the time of the Baader-Meinhof Gang and defused a half dozen urban terrorist bombs, including one specifically directed at him and his crew. (shameless plug: here's a short story about my dad: http://www.baader-meinhof.com/essays/BombDisposal.html)
I took him to the hurt locker last night and he basically enjoyed it. But he had two problems with it; one is the specific way they went about defusing some of the bombs; such as the guy at the end who had the locked on bomb. Basically in that situation he would have been looking for the power source (battery) and probably would have hooked up a rope or wire or something to it and ran the hell out of there, and then pulled like crazy on the wire to pull the battery off the dude. This would have given the bomber the best chance to live and protected the Renner character.
But the main problem my dad had was that the type of character that Renner was and the behavior he exhibited would just not have lasted a week in country. EOD absolutely values cool professionalism above all and taking risks, any risks, is generally a one way ticket out of the unit. And people prone to become that kind of a person generally aren't invited into the EOD. It's just the wrong personality for the role.
As my uncle said walking out of the movie; "it was a good movie with a main character that exists only in movies and has no relation to the real life guys in EOD".

As someone who has spent time in the military in the middle east during wartime, I think the only problems I had with the film, credibility-wise, were what lazespud said (about the unlikelihood of a cowboy bomb defuser) and the absence of commo or any semblance of a chain of command. No way that Renner's conduct would be tolerated more than a few days, and no way would they find themselves out in the middle of nowhere taking fire without commo to another unit or air/artillery support.
These are small complaints though, and don't detract materially from an outstanding movie.

BTW --
In case it wasn't clear from my first message; I loved the movie and thought Renner was just damned great. His character was a bullshit hollywood creation, but so was Indiana Jones. Didn't stop me from loving Raiders of the Lost Ark...
