Obama Doc Peek-Out

By The People: The Election of Barack Obama, that long-reported-about doc partially funded by Ed Norton's Class 5 Films and directed by Amy Rice and Alicia Sims, will have a brief Oscar-qualifying run at Manhattan's Sunshine Cinemas and L.A.'s Sunset 5 (no! not the Sunset 5! aagghh!) starting on 8.7 -- i.e., a week from Friday. It will thereafter have its official big-time debut on HBO on 11.3. In other words, no press screenings or preferential press treatment of any kind? Okay, fine -- I'll be there opening day.

1...2...3... I'm waiting for those crazy, bitter Birther fanatics to hold protests outside screenings of that documentary.

They tried the same strategy with the Roman Polanski doc. Didn't work, as I recall.

I am a Barack Obama supporter, but the fact of the matter is Obama got elected the same way every politician gets elected. It's sort of like sausage making, you don't really want to know how its made. And, I'm sure this documentary is not going to tell us.

P.S. Here's the secret: They make back-room promises in exchange for campaign contributions. Oh yeah, I'm from New Jersey - we know all about it.

I love when you get these conservatives who preface their responses by saying, "I am a huge Barrack Obama supporter but..." and then they unleash GOP talking-point after GOP talking-point.

The reason why they're making this film is because it's interesting to watch "Making of the President" type stories. After all, there are several similar films about previous Presidents and a series of popular books from the 60s and 70s, not to mention how many books written by insiders?

That's what happens. Not interested? Don't watch.

I am absolutely 100% not a conservative. I am pro-choice, pro drug legalization, and pro single payer universal health care. I am an atheist. I fall Democratic on every issue I can think of. That being said, all politicians get elected in the same way.

What GOP talking point do you think I'm espousing?

P.S. I'll also add that George W. Bush added a whole new way of getting elected. Outright theft. I don't accuse Obama of that.

I'm confused about this process, because the Polanski documentary is now nominated for several Emmys. Doesn't an Oscar-qualifying run disqualify this from the Emmys?

Good save, drbob.... you were close to getting on the black list.

And I love how people on blogs and posts say "I love how..." when they don't really love how, they're just saying it. Like "I love how when I try to walk I stub my toe on furniture."

I will say, though ya'll will think this is so predictable, that it doesn't really look that interesting. Surprise! But seriously, it's not a partisan thing. It sounds like a little "preaching to the choir" for me. I voted H.W. Bush in '88 and I'm glad he won but I can hardly think of anything more tedious than a doc on his campaign that year.

A better and more compelling doc would always, in my opinion, be on a candidate that lost, particularly one that started off well. Howard Dean's '04 campaign would be interesting to examine.

And the Sunset 5 comment is of note. I've always thought there should be a website for L.A. people that reviews and updates the status of movie theaters here.
i.e. the Showcase has closed, but nobody seems to give a shit. And the Sunset 5 at LEAST got some new seats with more leg room. That sort of thing.

Finally, calm down, dogcatcher. Just because a comment is something you don't agree with doesn't make it a "GOP talking point". Jeez that's overused. I just LOVE it when the words "talking points" are used. (ya like that? full-circle, baby!)

Some people might think a documentary chronicling the election of the first black President in US History might be interesting, and may just hold some historical value.

That's just me though...

"Obama got elected the same way every politician gets elected... I'm sure this documentary is not going to tell us."

Not sure what you mean, all campaigns differ and have some similarities. Are you thinking that 'The Making Of The President (1960) is the same as The War Room (94)? You might be right, this could be a hagiography, on the other hand, every single Frontline debrief on the previous election is well worth watching, even when they aren't anywhere near the full story. Its kind of a large topic, though its possible that someone could make a doc showing the phases of a campaign that are identical as was done in 'War Made Easy'.
