Ask Sean Connery

The lead-in copy for a 7.5 N.Y. Times story by Alex Williams called "Getting Through The Summer Job Blues" reads as follows: "Will Ehrenfeld, a Tufts senior, is staying home for the summer after he could not find a job." Somebody explain it to this kid. There's no giving up, and any job seeker who figures "okay, game over" and decides to just hang at home is a dead man. So Willy tried? Gave it his best shot? Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and enjoy endless carnal knowledge of the prom queen.

There are plenty of jobs out there, but I guess Willy wanted to spend the summer getting paid $20/hour to surf the internet in an air conditioned office.

I'd love a summer of sitting around doing nothing. He has 50 years of working in an office ahead of him. What's wrong with slacking off for a summer?

Americans are weird with their obsession with working all the time. Not taking sick days, cutting short vacation, etc. Why? Fucking relax. I love living here, but the office culture I work in is fucking mental. "I'm out of the office on vacation but I will be checking my BlackBerry" -- fucking why? Bury it in the garden for the summer and enjoy life.

"And then in the midst of the summer recession, your father was reduced to drinking domestic beer with his prep school classmates. The horror!"

At least they looked for a job - which was more than what I used to do during my summer breaks from college. Summer was the time explore and not punch a clock. But then again, I did go to a state school.

It's missing the impact of "go home and fuck the prom queen." That line made me not feel like I'd wasted my time watching the movie.

Yes, because when the actual national unemployment number is estimated to be around 20%(!), it's on account that he is giant loser that he can't find a job.

Jeff, if most of us could find work, we wouldn't have voted for Obama in the first place.

That kid can find a job. He just thinks he's above working at The Gap or Chili's.

After schilling our $120,000 on a Tufts education, I'd consider myself above working at fucking Chili's too.

Students looking for internships are trying to fill a much-needed (read: required) slot on their resumes. The consulting firms that I worked for would have looked at a summer vacancy before their senior year (and no, they would not have included Chili's or The Gap after having interned at a political think-tank) and thrown it in the trash. Everything they do is about prepping for a post B-School job, depressingly single-minded as that is.
In the salad days, this void would have been filled with "travel abroad," an also much-desired bullet point. For most parents of college-minded kids, those days have passed.
As for the minimum-wage dig: "Even the local Boston Market had no work."

jeffrey, don't mistake motion with action. There's nothing wrong with laying low, being thoughtful and contemplative, enjoying some time off before what will most likely become a grinding career. Sitting home and playing video games is not my idea of this, but he's on a laptop, so let's give him the benefit of the doubt.

And is it just me, or does that dog look like an AT-AT from Empire Strikes Back?
