The third installment in Matt Zoller Seitz's series on Michael Mann is up at the Museum of the Moving Image site. Seitz also has a pair of IFC.com reviews of the vaguely similar Bruno and Humpday.
From the article: "In this sense, nearly all Mann films are tragedies."
Most Mann films are poseur tragedies. The "flaws" of the main characters are the kind of flaws given by job interviewees when asked their worst feature and they say something like "I'm too dedicated" or "I work too hard". It's not a human defect in their character, it's that they're too resolute/professional/red-blooded/awesome and they get impeded and ground down by a world filled with their inferiors.
(And speaking of flaws, I saw "Public Enemies" last weekend, and I totally got why Jeff loved the film so much, because Mann does some king-size hating on the fat guy in the picture. How great would it be to see one of your major hang-ups validated by your favorite director on the big screen?)
Not too crazy about Mann's narrative/storytelling skill since most of his movies, like Ridley Scott's movies, almost always disappoint me in the story department. They always leave me feeling dissatisfied, like something was lacking.
However, I do love how Mann can create mood, atmosphere, and texture.
Public Enemies, however, even failed in that department. It's his worst movie.
