Take The A Train

As with any subway map, you need to focus on the legend and proceed from there. Consider the partial images below and then click on the big version.

Sorry. No Pinocchio, no sale. (It may be on there, but I got tired of looking; it's definitely not in the animation section.)

Wow, the first three titles my eyes focused on were The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Crash and Gran Torino.

Not even putting three of my favorite movies side-by-side (The Great Escape, Rocky and Die Hard) can make up for that.

This guy should have created another line and labelled it "my personal nerdy favorites" to include such lame movies as V for Vendetta, Return of the Jedi, and The Green Mile...among others.

Nice concept though.

The # 16 line is pathetic. I want off this train.

The first film my eyes lit upon was The Prestige (2006). An enjoyable film, but no way it belongs on anybody's list of the top 250 of all time.

La vita e bella (1997)!?!? Sorry, but this guy's taste is wack, even when you look at all the good to great choices on that map. I'm afraid I'll find Patch Adams if I look long enough.

To be fair, 250 cuts a pretty wide swath, so if the guy has 10 or 15 odd choices and/or omissions on there, it's not really so galling.

That said: The Hangover?!? If you're going to add some '09ers as future classics, please lord do not include this movie. $260 million or however much it ends up with should not buy respectability (and I say that as a fan of any number of low-brow dude-driven comedies).

And yeah, other recent choices are pretty lame for an all-timer list: Little Miss Sunshine, Gran Torino, V for Vendetta... sounds like some well-meaning dude you went to high school with listing his faves on Facebook. In general, I'm sure this crop skews way too modern, and I say that as someone whose personal favorite movies have largely been post-1980. Generally, it's a pretty guy-ish list -- there's, what, three musicals on here? Counting Amadeus? Not that a lot of musicals aren't overrated, but still.

I'll go to bat for The Prestige, though. It'll certainly figure into my best-of-this-decade list if I ever do one. Also love the inclusion of Life of Brian and Ed Wood.

And Return of the Jedi is fucking awesome.

I'm guessing he took it from the IMDB's top 250.

nemo, "The Prestige" would make my top 250 movies. I've watched it numerous times and am still finding things in it. To me a sign of greatness. Anytime you can re-watch a film you think you know backwards and forwards and see something new to appreciate ...

As for this map -- it's clever and like all lists is going to generate some discord (as in this thread). Really, it just reflects one person's opinions.
