So Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince opened with $51.8 million Wednesday, [followed with] $21.9 million Thursday, $26.8 million Friday and $29 million Saturday from 4,275 theaters, according to Nikki Finke's copy. (I'm in the Connecticut woods and happy for whatever big-city news I can get.) That makes a $79 million three-day weekend and a $159 million five-day cume.
Bruno, meanwhile, is morgue material with a projected $8 million weekend. The $2.8 million it earned on Friday represented an 80% drop from the previous Friday's take, and Saturday's $3 million haul amounted to a 66% drop from the previous Saturday. But let's not have anyone slagging Universal's marketing team -- they promoted Sacha Baron Cohen's film vigorously and inventively.

Thankfully, this aspect of Baron Cohen's career seems to have hit a dead end.
Now hopefully he can go on and build on the terrific work he did in Sweeney Todd and Talladega Nights.

I wonder how Public Enemies is doing, i saw it thought it was great, the HD was vivid and really brought that era to life, Depp is the true movie of this generation (Brad Pitt is lifeless compared to Depp) Bale was dour and was that Stephen Dorf i saw? What's Mann working on now anyone know...

Public Enemies is unusually populated with critics darling actors and former It boys and girls doing small parts.
I thought Bruno was fairly funny, but for some reason I'm not sad to see it go.

Not surprised that Bruno has dropped so sharply this weekend. I haven't seen it, but I've heard mostly negative comments about the film from so many people (not just critics, etc).

Yes I figure Public Enemies should finish in the mid-90 range. Can't see it breaking 100, though it might come very close.
Although I found the movie absolute crap, I'm still glad that Mann will keep on making movies with a little less resistance from studios and financiers now that Public Enemies turned out not to be a bomb.

"West Portal resident Linda Burke, 58, and her husband, Mike Burke, 59, were walking home after watching "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" at a nearby theater and were across the street when the [MUNI train] crash occurred."
58 and 59 year-olds going to a Harry Potter film without grandkids? I know I shouldn't be surprised anymore, but I just can't envision these two gray-haired folks walking out of the theater, solemnly talking about muggles and Hogwarts.
I wonder if they already saw Transformers. "Well, dear, I thought that John Tuturro's ass looked just fine. And weren't those twins precious? Oh, how I laughed when they said "feets, don't fail me now!""

There is really no doubt in my mind that Bruno finally actually did something to expose societal homophobia in tanking like this, say what you will about the actual quality of the film but since when does America turn its back this violently on sequels to immensely popular films just for the crime of being retreads of the original.

I thought Bruno was extremly funny but it crosses the line in terms of mainstream acceptance. After seeing 10% walkouts and some people compaining at the end that it was pornographic Im not surprised by the drop at all.

LOL at the Bruno drop, probably a little too much gay/dick for all the fratboys expecting Borat II.
And I hope Public Enemies hits $100 mil. There isn't much else in terms of serious adult drama to compete with (at the multiplexes, anyway). I actually tried to see The Hurt Locker this weekend but as I pulled up to the arthouse I saw a line around the block, which I have never encountered at that theatre before. Knowing how small the place was, I decided not to go as I didn't want shitty front row/off to the side seats. Have to try again next weekend.

On the other side of the spectrum, I also think that the pre-release cries of "gay minstrel show!" got to some people, especially in the gay community. I work with a lot of gay guys who refuse to see the movie, and after I admitted to seeing it and laughing, their faces, try as the might, just couldn't mask their disappointment in me

You could turn it around and say that the fact Bruno got to no. 1 in the first place was a surprise, and testament to Cohen's post-Borat starpower. I mean, five years ago would anyone have thought that a movie featuring so much cock and balls and overt references to gay sexuality could even be seen outside the Sundance channel, let alone be promoted on every major talkshow around the nation?
500 Days of Summer and Hurt Locker both did well this weekend. I think 500 Days could get the same kind of cult status amongst college kids as Eternal Sunshine or Garden State or Juno.

The real winner this weekend is 'Summer with its huge PTA. Pretty impressive, considering it was up against Potter.
Rich: I liked him in 'Todd, but he still played a caricature. He needs to expand his range a bit.
frank: It was weird seeing some grannies showing up for Hangover at my theater.
KC: Why would people be homophobic against a straight guy playing a gay guy? Personally, I think the opposite situation is the case, which is that we're tired of that Birdcage-style bad acting, and we want some depth.

Bosh: You mean that 'Summer will be forgotten in a year, because it was over-hyped to death by people who don't know anything about entertaining movies with depth?

Hey Frankbooth -- my dad is 70 and went to Harry Potter this weekend. He's seen 'em all (I've only seen two) and read all the books. He sees all the genre/geek stuff -- I think I got it from him.

Glad Bruno is tanking after its initial success. Sasha Baron Cohen is unwatchable no matter what schtick he deploys. He almost makes Mike Myers look versatile in comparison.
Is Baron Cohen really exploring anything meaningful or instructive about American culture? He is in no position to improve or expand anyone's mind. He's likely just enjoying the money and his own reputation as someone who unflinchingly exposes uncomfortable truths.
Damn boring and I wish he'd go away. At least I can impose the "Not In My House" rule. It's kind of fun to hate on him, especially because it is impossible to get away from his smug self-satisfied face everywhere.
