VF Exposing Moneyball Bad Guys?

A friend confides that Vanity Fair "is doing a story on the Moneyball fiasco." He doesn't know who the writer is but says he's "heard about the article from a friend who was on the project. Should be very interesting. My understanding is that the angle is pro-Soderbergh and will detail how he was screwed over. Screwed by Amy Pascal, Bryan Lourd and, yes, Brad Pitt. Soderbergh was certainly not a creative auteur run amok on the studio's dime. The email trail from Pascal to Soderbergh makes it very clear that she was fully aware of what the film was and was excited and into it until the end."

A Vanity Fair source said he couldn't determine if the story was in the works or not. A call to VF spokesperson Beth Kseniak was unreturned as of 3:45 pm LA time.

Howard Bryant had a good feature on Billy Beane on espn.com, making a few references to the Moneyball fiasco.

A commenter had mentioned something to this effect in one of the original Moneyball implosion stories. I'm just as excited now as I was then to read it.

What I can't understand is that this movie was going to be made in the first place. Is the whole thing about Billy Beane looking over stats that some people overlook and drafting some good ball players really a movie. Beane may draft well but he works for a team that spends no money so once the players get to Oakland they perform well and then leave for big paydays. Wow, sounds like a lot of box office fun. Look, I am a Soderbergh fan so I am intriguied, but really can't see how this would have been an interesting movie.

The material seems better suited to someone like Michael Mann or possibly Darren Aronofsky.

I'm not surprised Brad Pitt is considered partly to blame, as he is notorious for signing onto films and when on set having major problems with the scripts enough to disrupt filming, - The Devil's Advocate, Tree of Life, State of Play...

I admit I was hugely skeptical of what kind of movie this would make but the screenplay was actually really fun.

Before reading it I think I made a sarcastic comment on these boards along the lines of "Will there be scenes of Bill James explaining On Base Percentage?"

And there are.
And they're funny.

Would be people have gone to see it? I dunno.

I still want to see this, but I'm even happier that Soderbergh is out. Just not the right vibe for this.

Like I said earlier (http://hollywood-elsewhere.com/2009/06/soderbergh_scre.php), if David Fincher has it in him to do a light comedy, THIS is it. Zodiac meets Bull Durham.

Actually, another person who would give this a great effort is Ron Howard, as long as holds down the schmaltzy (i.e. the Ron Howard of "Apollo 13" vs the Ron Howard of "Cinderella Man.")

Didn't Pitt also leave Almost Famous? Can't imagine that was a SCRIPT issue, however...
