I'm trying to take a wait and see position, but right now, all I can think is "How could it take James Cameron 5 years to come up with cat people?" These aliens are so closely molded on humans, so of course they'll be semi-believable. I always argued that the Star Wars folks did much more ambitious sfx work by trying to get emotions out of some truly alien character designs. Similarly, as impressive as Gollum was at the time, his design is just a human with sunken or exaggerated features, so of course that one layer of disbelief is removed.

JeffK: that's actually already been discussed by Cameron (can't remember which interview). Basically, the early Navi designs were way more out there, but since ***ZOMG SPOILERS*** Sam Worthington has to fall for Zoe Saldana's character, they found to make that believable, they had to slowly and gradually design the Navi to be much closer to human norms. (Cameron said something along the lines that they'd ask their designers and creature designers "would you fuck 'em?" and adjust accordingly).

It's interesting to see the subtle areas that they're emphasizing alien design in a way that's impossible to do prosthetically: extra large orbital cavities with the eyes set further apart, the neck/shoulders extending father than the human body, the palms look extra long, etc.

Here is something I can not get my head around with this film. (Maybe it was explained with the Comic Con footage.) So they can create this half-human/half-Na'Vi hybrid and send them light-years away, but they can not find cure for the paralyzed main character.

And yes JW he looks just like the Pinnocchio hybrid.

Well Cameron mind you is also a deep sea nut. The aliens have an amphibious aspect to them that corresponds with his passion for oceanic lifeforms. Nevertheless I think they look cool.

Does anyone know if they're going to extend the preview for entire weekend instead of a day?
