Funny Guy

MTV News correspondent Jett Wells pitches the idea of Brad Pitt as a dry-attitude comedian by way of his performances in Se7en, Snatch, Fight Club, Ocean's 11 and Burn After Reading. Wait...are we missing something? The brain-dead couch stoner he played in True Romance, perhaps?

... or Pitt in Mr. and Mrs. Smith-- wincing and mime-choking his way to a happy marriage.

That or Troy-- when he's slapping his cousin's ass with a pointy wooden plank or shouting at his Mermaden about taking immortality beyond beaches while aimlessly pointing a sword.

In all seriousness, can Jett not even glance at a wiki or imdb page? Straight comedy was pretty much all over Pitt's performance in The Mexican, and (to way better effect) in True Romance. And I know it's terrible, but how is Cool World not a straight comedy?

This isn't even a sort of revelation. Most of his characters, even in stinkers (Meet Joe Black), are comedic in some way. It's just part of his persona to bring some sort of screw-it-all funny, such as in Thelma & Louise, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and even 12 Monkeys.

Brad Pitt is funny guy. I used to think he was boring, but I think that's just because he's an epic stoner. But I think he'd actually be fun to hang out with. He seems to choose boring wives though. He should date Anna Faris or someone fun.

SEVEN was on IFC last night and my God was Pitt awful in that movie, but the kind of awful that made me laugh every time he showed up on the screen.

"What's in the box? What's in the box?!"

Priceless.

Seven is incredible, easily one of the top 20 films of the '90s. "What's in the box?!" is a classic line and his delivery always slays me.

To be honest though, it's probably a more accurate reaction to news of that magnitude than some stoic, studied response. If you had the slightest inclination that your wife had been decapitated I think your guard would drop somewhat too and you'd probably make a few retarded sounding outbursts.

It's like at the end of Baz Luhrmann's Romeo & Juliet, when Clare Danes emits a honk like a seal when she realizes Romeo is dead. It always draws a laugh, yet it's probably one of the more honest depictions of grief you'll see in mainstream movies.

Dry attitude, yeah, but Pitt also goes all-out comedic for at least portions of Snatch, Ocean's, Fight Club, 12 Monkeys, Burn, not to mention things like his voice work on King of the Hill or his bit with Jackass. There's nothing dry about a lunatic jumping up and down laughing hysterically.

Which brings me to my next point: Could Pitt perhaps fill in a spot on the Farrely's constantly shifting Three Stooges cast? Considering his hilarious reaction to Malkovich's punch in Burn, I'm thinking yes.

I've read this article by a few other writers. Every other article was better. I'm sure the fact that he's your son helped his career move right along, because there are about 14 people from this talk back community who would do a much better job.

Matt Cousens -- a golden rule of comedy is: If you are going to be offensive, you better make sure you're funny.

The internet comment version of that is: If you are going to insult someone's son, at least have a valid point in there somewhere. "This stinks," is not exactly great criticism.

And yes, I am sure the bigwigs at Viacom were scrambling to hire Jett in order to curry favor with Jeff. Scrambling.

"Only in his most recent roles has he really experimented with satire and overt comedy."

False.

IMDB.com is a useful tool - just a tip.

Also, check out any of his foreign commercials. He's great in the Wes Anderson Soft Bank ads. Very slapstick.

Fred, you're not really making any sense. You're trying to be cute, i get it. I'm not trying to be a dick just for the sake of it. I just call it like i see it. I'm sure Jeff has no connections, whatsoever. You're right. I truly believe that many of the talk backers could write a better article, that's all i'm saying. Honestly, how do you leave the since mentioned Pitt roles (True Romance, etc) off that list? Usually, when someone re hashes and rips off other articles, they at least add to it.

I'm not going to shit on the kid just because of who is daddy is. I will simply say that the kid played it far too safe, picking the most obvious movies to pick on the subject, despite the fact that there were several better choices, from his small role in 1989's Happy Together to his first starring role in 1992's Johnny Suede and then on to True Romance, 12 Monkeys and Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Granted, Jett is dealing with mostly mindless MTV sycophants, but maybe next time, he can pass a copy of his next assignment on to daddy, who can post it here and let dozens of cinematic experts argue the merits and faults of his suppositions and make it the best it can be.

Just saying it was useless critique -- "You stink, others can do better than you." That's a complaint, not a critique and I don't think anyone wants to read nonconstructive complaining. And you really think he was hired because of Jeff? Maybe his resume got looked at, but you really think he got a job because his father has an Internet movie blog (regardless of how good it may be)?

"The only superstar leading man who smokes more bud than Pitt is Harrison Ford, who has been perpetually stoned since Heroes."

The late, great John Gregory Dunne once wrote in an autobiographical article that an underemployed actor friend of his and Joan Didion's built a deck for their LA area home, but the project was a slow one because said actor and his co-workers smoked so much marijuana. Years later, Dunne mentioned this again, referring to Ford by name (a future superstar built my deck!), with no reference to smoking anything.
