Pirate Steampunk

The thumbnail plot for Jerry Bruckheimer's Pirates of the Caribbean 4, a connected friend confides, is a search by Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and other parties for the fountain of youth. This is the same MacGuffin plot that George Lucas was supposedly considering for an Indy sequel. There will also be some kdin of Captain Nemo-type villain utilizing new-style technology. Sounds like they're invoking the "steampunk" style we've seen gain more and more of a foothold in genre conventions, including Comic Con.

Uh, I thought Lucas always wanted Aliens and that's what everybody was wary of?

Besides, wouldn't Fountain of Youth be a bit too close to what they did in Last Crusade?

I mean, I don't want to contradict what Google shows...

You know, if you replaced Johnny Depp with Russell Brand, nobody would notice.

Of course we all know that Jack Sparrow looking for the Fountain of Youth will only be one of 10 plot strands held together only by explosions and Depp's overrated drunken karaoke performance.

You know, the Pirates franchise is far and away the silliest, most absurd, most overwrought, overblown, overreaching, over-everythinged franchise of the decade, but I find it by far the most compelling, aside from the Bourne films.

However, there's something to be said about leaving well enough alone. I don't know anyone else who enjoyed the third one, and I don't think the audience is there that Disney/Bruckheimer believe there to be.

Plus, honestly, Jack Sparrow was somehow the least compelling aspect of the series by the end.

I seldom comment but I've read great Wells EVERY DANG DAY since 1996 Reel.com -- and since I am a Swede I agree with most of Wells views and his stunning and always sharp writing.

Still, sometimes Wells is off the mark, but I mean, who's never been wrong sometimes? No problem.

But on INGLORIOUS BASTERDS Wells is IMHO way off. It's like Wells not being hip and open enough to "get" BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN or DOGVILLE or Sarris misfire take on BONNIE AND CLYDE.

It's like Wells complaining he didn't get NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN either -- because the end didn't deliver a climax the way his favorite movie RAMBO 4 did -- btw, talk about dehumanizing carnage without any real redeeing value unless seeing people being obliterated in close-up for pleasure. Wells swallowed that one hook line and sinker. Rube, low-thread stuff. But I love Wells and I forgive him.

But the exception usually proves the rule...

IMO IB is the greatest movie this year -- easily. For all the GI JOE tripe and all why complain on a movie who dares to break so many rules. It's a provoking, outrageous and blackly comic masterpiece who's strangely humanistic and feminist despite all the carnage.

No wonder all of Germany hail it as a masterpiece...

IMO such a strange and unique masterpiece. This years witty, dark ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES. So surprising. It has so many underpinnings and themes. One could see it as a critique on fascists and opportunists everywhere: Landa being AIG, Cheney, Blackwater -- you name them.

And wonderfully comic too. Not too often that happens to see such a lip-smackingly stylish originality on the big screen.

If Tarantino were Cormac McCarthy or Salinger or Philip K. Dick nobody would complain on their ultra-weird creations. Tarantino, with all his faults -- he's human after all -- is such a breath of fresh air with all the Bay's and the Sommers polluting cinemas everywhere these days.

I've never seen Wells so off the mark before. I forgive him.

BTW -- on another note -- it saddens me to see that USA have such problems clinching "Medicare of all". I live in Sweden and we've had Medicare for all for decades. With all small problems -- let me be absolutely clear -- IT WORKS PERFECTLY.

All those myths about long lines and all that is pure bullcrap. Pure lies. How can you all fall for such balatant lies?

And you're not going socialist because you have this wonderful asset for your citizens. That's also a rotten baloney-myth. Read up on this and you won't regret it.

If the Americans get their stuff together and fix this so that all US citizens get the best help immediately if they're sick without any payment necessary -- YOU WILL NEVER REGRET IT EVER!

I assure you. You will be as proud of that change as you are of Lincoln freeing the slaves and FDR's new deal. No joke.

Very sorry for hijacking the thread but I wanted my opinion heard even if it doesn't gel with the thread subject.

As has been said, the Fountain of Youth was stated pretty clearly at the end of the third PotC. And, apart from being similar to the Holy Grail, Spielberg and Lucas have reportedly already settled on a macguffin for the next Indy film, which is in development. I hear Spielberg is getting more say this time around.

Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley in the POTC films, two of the worst screen performances of all time. Absolutely shocking.

My family, who will watch pretty much anything, sat around one Christmas to watch POTC and every single one of them had lost interest after about 20 minutes. How these films were successful is totally beyond me. Perhaps the perfect example of Jeff's Eloi mall-dweller theory.
