Joe Johnston's The Wolf Man (Universal, 2.10.10) looks like just another growling howling saliva-spewing bullshit CG wolfman movie, except it's in period with bearded Anthony Hopkins chewing the supporting scenery. Love me some Hopkins! The fact that it's set in what looks like 1890s England or thereabouts makes the casting of Benicio del Toro seem odd. He plays an American but let's face it -- he looks like a dressed-up Tijuana narcotics detective.

Looks fun to me. AKW script is better than a David Koepp script, anyday. And, well, to put it blunty, er, honestly rather...Benicio, in my experience has done no wrong--quite the contrary--he deserves an award for everything he does.
The trailer gives away who the first werewolf is though.

Looks alright. Although Del Toro's look is bizarre - he looks like a scruffy civil servant called Peter working in some drab Basingstoke office.
I thought it was going to be practical effects for the Wolfman himself? Is he still going to be Rick Bakered up, or CGIed?

Didn't know this was going to be a period film. I'm impressed they went that route.
Looks like an updated Hammer film, which is right in my wheelhouse. I'm disappointed it's not coming out on Halloween, as originally planned.

Big suprise, it looks like it has the tone of every other Joe Johnston flick: Popcorn/Matinee throwback entertainment. I'm sure it'll make a ton of dough and then be promptly forgotten. The cast is first rate though; I'm sure those four will chew up scenery like *insert werewolf pun here*.

Something occurs to me though. Doesn't Hopkins look almost exactly like he did in Bram Stoker's Dracula, 17 long years ago? A deal with the Devil, indeed.

I wonder if they will attract any Twilight fans.
I remember on CHUD years back there was a woman who was obsessed with Van Helsing. She'd dress up like Richard Roxburgh's Dracula and post pictures online. A genuine fruit loop. It was quite hilarious. She also was all gooey about the tragic gothic romance between some character and another. Can't remember which. It was hilarious. She was dreadfully ugly and looked as if she lived alone.

I found this 10X more entertaining/exciting than the "Avatar" trailer.
I love the mood some of those shots set. Its about time we get to see an O.G. monster creeping through foggy woods!

looks gnarly. love the period setting. cast is great. johnston's done good work in the past. for a movie with so many behind-the-scenes-problems this looks fucking awesome. sleepy hollow-esque, and for me, that's a good thing.

Wow. I must be in a huge minority, because I think this looks abysmal (sub-"Sherlock Holmes"), while I'm super excited about "Avatar". I'm wondering if expectations (low for this one, impossibly high for the other one) are a factor for most people?

Yeah, Blunt is ace, despite a slight bum-chin. If the Pirates producers want a new hottie character to replace Keira, they should go for her.

You're missing the point though. It's not that people are against special effects, it's that they're against wall-to-wall CGI which is what many modern blockbusters are. Did you hear anyone complaining about the effects in The Dark Knight? No, because they were integrated into the story seamlessly. It was a huge summer blockbuster without relying on endless CGI.

I like it...the setting, the cast. The shot of the transforming eye was kind of lame, and the wide shots look like a guy with a hunchback. But overall, it's looks like a good throwback to the Hammer, Universal horror films.

I suppose the challenge of AVATAR is that Cameron is deliberately trying to tell a story that's impossible to do without wall-to-wall CGI. Whether or not he succeeds is still in question.

I didn't know this was going to be a period movie either... that makes it more interesting. Trailer made it look like brainless fun, the level of acting talent is impressive and should keep the film afloat. I'm stoked to see a werewolf film at all, as I'm getting sick of all the vampire hype. I've always preferred the brutality of the werewolf to the "romance" of the vampire. But it looks like American Werewolf in London will keep the title of greatest werewolf film for now.
I actually cut a Wolf Man mash-up trailer a couple weeks ago, there are a couple of parallels between the two that I found funny.

There's actually precedence in the original Wolf Man for del Toro to look out of place. It isn't like Lon Chaney Jr. looked anymore like the son of English lord Claude Rains than del Toro looks like Anthony Hopkins' son. Chaney did fine and I'm sure that del Toro will be decent as well.

Looks solid, hoping for the best. This is probably the first "classy" werewolf movie in, what, 20 years? More?
It's funny... Johnston (who's just about the most underrated 'journeyman' director out there) was a last-minute fill-in here, but between this and Captain America this could well be his "year."

Okay. What the hell. I was under the impression that this film would be more or less 100% Rick Baker's practical special effects, not CGI. Did the news deceive me again? Last year, I had learned that Indiana Jones 4 was going to be 70% practical effects and 30% CGI, and the finished product of that was a total reversal of the statistic. I hate people.

Looks more entertaining than Gans' take on the subject, anyway. But Brotherhood's French, so it's automatically better, which is the reason Besson gets away with average b-movie directing.
Gabriel: My problem with Avatar is that it seems too generic, considering the expectations.
