"Dress up"? To go to a local bar and hoist a few? People used to dress up back in the '50s. I once saw an old kinescope of an audience watching the live broadcasting of The Steve Allen Show in 1957 or thereabouts, and virtually every man was wearing a jacket and a tie and a white shirt, and all the women wore nice dresses. Unbelievable. But I have to break it to you, Wrecktem. Average people don't dress up any more except for weddings and business-related parties and maybe hot weekend clubs. But not for concerts or plays. Surely you've caught on to this. Why, then, would you expect people to dress up to go to a little neighborhood bar?

Nobody thinks the reddish-pink color of the Minetta Tavern sign is beautiful? Whether anyone says so or not, it is.

I'm not saying people should be in dinner jackets and frocks. I'm saying, if you're going to a party, wear a pair of slacks and a nice shirt. It's respectful to the host and it makes you not look like a slob. Like these slobs.

It doesn't take much effort to look presentable. Does it?

Wow, Wrecktum. Come to Portland. You will be absolutely horrified by the lack of formal wear. You can waltz into the nicest restaurants in town wearing a decent t-shirt and some nice denim and not get a second glance. I work downtown, and when you see someone in a suit, it's almost a given that they're from out of town.

And I love it. As Ryan said above, the suit is by far the least imaginative and robtotic piece of clothing on the planet. It was a uniform. Once we get fully past a suit and tie standard, it will come back as a fashion *choice*, not an expectation.
