Really?

Initially posted by People and In Contention. The real Amelia Earhart was so egoistic that she had her initials painted on her aviator jumpsuit, like some present-day bling-bling football player? Find me the photograph that proves this because I don't believe it. The Earhart I've read about didn't see herself as a rock star. She was brave, dedicated, modest, hardcore, etc. Yes, I could be wrong.

Am I the only one slightly surprised to see Richard Gere on top the the poster? Is he still riding high on his Nights in Rodanthe and its $41M gross (other than Chicago, his only hit of the decade).

Not trying to be mean to Gere, I was just surprised.

The only point-of-interest for me is that Christopher Eccleston is in it. He's a fantastic, underrated actor (GI Joe aside) and I'd love to see him get some Oscar buzz. Otherwise the trailer is just begging for awards consideration, as is this poster. Mira Nair is a fine director but it just looks so bland. And Ewan McGregor really needs to stop playing all these wet characters and make another movie with Danny Boyle.

Gere has always reminded me of a skipping rock. You know when you skip a rock across a lake, just when it's about to go under, it bounces back and coasts just a bit longer. Gere's career has always had that "bump" at just the right time. He's spaced out the high points very, very well.

An Officer and a Gentleman - coast - Pretty Woman - coast - Primal Fear - coast - Chicago - coast.

Earhart was a very brave woman.
She also was a so-so pilot.
In fact, (if you want to reduce it to gender), there were at least a dozen well known aviatrixes (I always loved that word) at the time who were more skilled as flyers.
She was as much a media creation as anything.

That being said, I've always greatly admired her and again, her bravery can not be questioned.

Gere rules. Most undervalued "movie star" actor going. Yeah, maybe he's only had a handful of box-office "home runs," but guy's had plenty of doubles and as someone said above, older women love the guy. Why wouldn't his name be above the title? You wouldn't bury Jeff Bridges' presence in the fine print.

Amelia Earhart was an awesome, inspiring, courageous woman who worked hard and went for her dreams. She broke barriers for women and paved a new road for females in aviation (and not just that, but also male-dominated fields).

Earhart did lots of product endorsements and sponsored a line of AE-branded clothing. She also was referred to as "AE" by friends. It doesn't strike me as particularly egotistical or "rock star"-like that she would have her initials on her flightsuit as well.

Actually, by the time AE came along, women were very prominent in aviation. Since aviation was a generally new pursuit it wasn't established historically to be an all-male institution. Chicks dug flying.

Richard Gere's career is a lot better than most think.
To Wit:

Home Runs:

An Officer and a Gentleman, Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride, Chicago

Triples:

American Gigolo, Primal Fear

Solid Doubles:

Internal Affairs, Sommersby, The Jackal, The Mothman Prophecies, Unfaithful, Shall We Dance, Nights in Rodanthe

Art House Class:

Looking for Mr. Goodbar, Days of Heaven, And the Band Played On, Dr T and the Women, The Hoax, I'm Not There

Not all these flicks are great (some are pretty bad), But all were at least modestly successful. He's had a lot better career than most think. I would say that for Officer, Gigolo, Chicago, and Internal Affairs he was Oscar worthy. And a couple of others are close.

One of William Goldman's books has a great anecdote regarding Gere. He says that they were producing a script in 1988 and they couldn't find a lead actor and they went through about 50-100 names, and Gere's name did not even come up, despite the fact that it was a role he would've been good at, because he had fallen that far in Hollywood's eyes.

I think it's strange that people are so much more dismissive of him than, say, John Travolta, who has surely starred in more terrible movies and bigger flops.

Gere's another one of those actors who are only interesting to me when they're either playing villains (INTERNAL AFFAIRS, still my favorite performance of his, and a good movie to boot) or somewhat shady characters (DAYS OF HEAVEN, CHICAGO, THE HUNTING PARTY, the first half of PRIMAL FEAR, the first half of PRETTY WOMAN). There are exceptions (in AND THE BAND PLAYED ON, he's very good as the Michael Bennett character, and I give him full credit because it wasn't until he agreed to play the role that other actors were willing to sign on. Also, while he's playing a shady character in THE HOAX, his performance seems too studied). His part here looks rather bland, which more than likely means he'll be bland, at least if the trailer is any indication.

To be fair, she was *fucked over* by a plane ;-)

As for the jumpsuit, yeah, dumb idea. Even if she did wear an "AE" jumpsuit, not only does it come off today like American Eagle apparel, it doesn't employ the iconic leather jacket, scarf and chinos look she had.

Also, this movie feels really non-essential. After all, there was the well-known Diane Keaton version just a few years back. And while no one I know actively *hates* Swank, I don't care how many Oscars are on her shelf, she's still Hilary Swank.

Even if this movie is surprisingly excellent, what are they really expecting here? The similarly-themed Aviator only did a $100M, and that (good) movie had Martin Scorcese and Leo DiCaprio. I hate to play the fake Danny Zelter game of making wildly stupid box office predictions, but in this case-- $70M domestic, *tops*.
