The plug has been pulled on the 2010 CineVegas Film Festival, Indiewire's Peter Knegt reported earlier today. The Great Recession has turned Las Vegas into a City of Hard Times, and it would seem that festival chiefs Robin Greenspun and Trevor Groth were basically told "sorry, guys" by the Palms Resort & Casino, which has hosted the festival for the last several years. I could tell that the festival was trimming back slightly in '08 and a bit more so last June. I hope that things rebound.

Fucking recession.
The Comedy Festival had the rug pulled from it, too. There goes my Christmas money, not to mention ten nights in Caesars Palace, a decent per diem, doing shots of Thunderbird off of Sarah Silverman's chest and getting away from the L.A.
It was a ghost town last year. I imagine it's even worse now.

Why would the Palms casino turn away business in a recession? Even a scaled back festival is better than no festival for the bottom line.

The Palms must have been taking a loss on it; otherwise, it makes no sense.

To be fair, there are far too many film festivals and far too many awards ceremonies. If the recession culls some of the unnecessary ones, that's no bad thing.

Roman Polanski arrested by Swiss officials on his rape warrant. Will he be extradited to the US for trial?

That was my only opportunity to cover a film festival as a blogger. Bummer.
Wonder if Hopper will try to re-do it later down the road.
