Minnesota Sen. Al Franken recently drew a map of all 50 states at the Minnesota State Fair. And totally freehand. Definitely impressive but an old bit. He did the same thing on David Letterman's NBC show back in '84. In one minute and 55 seconds.

awesome! the old letterman clip is even better since you can see it in real time and not sped up like this one. i used to think he was just a dumb comedian but lately ive been seeing more clips of him talking where hes definitely kind of impressive.

He did it on SNL weekend update back in '88 in order to show how, (by his account), Dukakis could still win. This was three days before the election. (i.e. it was pretty much over)
Good bit, though.
You could watch the SNL clip of this, but then you'd have to fellate Lorne Michaels to get a key to the sacred SNL clip vault. Or pray that it shows up on Hulu some day.

"If only he had the charisma?" Gee, he was only a writer and featured player on one of the most popular, cutting-edge, late-night sketch shows back in its heyday. Okay, I guess the "heyday" part is arguable -- there was probably more than one -- but the guy's an entertainer. Come on now.

hes a senator now, so by that standard hes got a lotta charisma. but snl SUX they should have cancelled that show back in 1976 when they were still on top!

You're kidding, right Gina?
Cancelled back in 1976? During their second season? Just as Bill Murray was starting? How high are you?
Besides, SNL's true peak was around 1989/1990. It's always a given that the first four years were the best because of the cast and because of the historic nature of the show but try watching some of those shows now. Many more of the sketches haven't aged as well as you might remember.
Between 1988 and 1991 they were hitting on all cylinders. The writing was best it's ever been.
Check out Alec Baldwin's Earth Day show from 1990 or Matthew Modine's from 1988. (actually the Modine one is the where Franken did his map bit during Update). Also, Mel Gibson's from '89. Every single sketch in those shows is still funny.
Laff it up, lizards.

Travis: So you've been hating the show since '94, too?

Not HATING.... not hating at all, actually. It's certainly had its moments. If they re-ran the shows since then by compacting them into a "best bits from 3 or 4 shows into one" you might have something pretty good.
Also, I'm a really big after-the-fact Tracy Morgan fan. I've come to like his "30 Rock" character so much and he's a really nice guy, too (unusual for a comedy star), that when I look back on some of his older stuff on SNL it's funnier to me now than it was then.
