I met Bad Lieutenant director Werner Herzog around 9:30 pm last night at the Tribeca Grand Hotel. Immediate following this he sat for a q & a before an audience in the hotel's screening room. Herzog asked Bad Lieutenant screenwriter William Finklestein and dp Peter Zeitlinger to join him in front of the crowd during the interview.

OK. So he recognizes that Bad Lieutenant and the Kinski doc contain laughs. Good. But does he appreciate the humor in Grizzly Man? From Treadwell's bear-crap aggrandizing and absurd rationalizations, to Herzog's ham-fisted orchestrated interviews, GM is one of the great dark comedies in recent years.

Jeff -- Did Herzog speak any word on US distribution of the film? There were some rumblings that it's going straight to DVD/Bluray in Feb with limited run in NY/LA... If so, that'd be a bummer. This sounds like a smashing fun ride.
As always thanks for the great interview.

Playlist & /film both ran with stories linking to this announcement. "A limited release in November" sure sounds like they're trying to dump it quick. Surprising considering how many positive this-shit-is-so-absurd-it-has-to-be-seen nods it's gotten from all the festival showings..

thanks for the update Gabriel. looking at the official website would've been the smart thing to do but so many blogs were running with "bare-bones/straight-to-dvd release" jargon i assumed they didn't have this info available.

The only reason I knew to look is that he said during the "Fitzcarraldo" Q&A that it was coming out on November 20th. He also said "My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?" will be out sometime in December, but I can't find anything to confirm that.

First Look actually had a screening here in Dallas last night.
I liked it a lot in that crazy, schizo-comedy kind of way. It's very funny, ugly, surreal and insane in an under-control, auteuristic sort of way. I enjoyed Nicolas Cage on screen for the first time since "Adaptation". Audience seemed to eat it up, too, with the exception of 3-4 walkouts.

This REALLY needs a big release, preferably without much intimation given to the audience as to exactly what it is or, at least, what it's ultimately "up to." Herzog's approach with what amounts to a "genre spoof" (and make no mistake, that's what this is... though I had to wait until pretty-much the last ten to fifteen minutes to be absolutely sure of that) is something that really NEEDS to catch an audience by surprise whether they know of the original or not: It's superior to Ferara's film in every concievably way, save for the fact that Keitel's performance and Cage's are two singularly different to really be "compared." You haven't seen an ostensibly "mainstream" movie star go THIS far over the edge (or purpose) in a lead role in a long time.
