I don't exactly live under a rock, and yet somehow the news of the death of journalist Shari Roman, which happened on 9/13 (or right smack dab in the middle of the Toronto Film Festival), eluded me until I read this 10.4 Indiewire report by Scott Macaulay. An excellent lady. Sharp, friendly, always inquisitive. I first met her at a Los Angeles Entertainment Weekly pitch meeting in '92 or thereabouts. Macaulay's story doesn't say what took her; only that it was a "short illness." Very sorry.

I remember when the guy who did 'Murder in the First' died, and I said something, and you were pretty snarky in response. So, because of that, I'm going to just say exactly what you said then to you here.

What does "if" mean, or what did it mean then? I'm lost.

"If Shari is reading" -- the implication, so far as I understood it, was "the person is dead, so they ain't doin' what you're iffing about".

This is a total shock.
Shari was (and I'm having trouble referring to her in the past tense) a complete joy to hang with, a wacky girl in the best possible Holly Golightly way. Her interests ranged from modern art and photography (as I recall, she once worked for doggie photographer William Wegman) to avant-garde movies and music.
Unlike so many neurotic creative types, Shari seemed completely comfortable in her own skin, whether she was talking with homeless folks or a world-class filmmaker like Lars von Trier. I remember a decade or so ago I had a funny dream about taking a bubble bath with Shari and, even though we were never amorous towards each other in real life, she thought it was a hoot and would joke about it every time we met.
We would see each other only about once or twice a year at film festivals or art gallery openings or on the streets of London, but each night we saw each other it was like long lost relatives picking up from the previous conversation as if no time had passed by at all. I always wondered about that little scar above her lip but never got up the courage to ask where it came from.
The last time I saw her was at Sundance in 2008, I think. As usual, she was fluttering around before a screening of a small, obscure, unsold flick rather than one of the hotly-hyped headliner films. She loved discovering small gems, and would champion whomever she felt were the most genuine artists instead of the poseur marketers.
Shari was an amazing, bright, vivacious spirit and I am just stunned by this sad news. Somewhere, a little area of heaven is a lot more colorful and artsy. Rest in peace, girl.

Truly sorry to hear this. Shari was one of the most fascinating, real, and genuinely nice people I knew in L.A.

Sorry, I couldn't resist my own lame joke ... this is just a sick story and it attracts sickness. Just look how nasty the room is getting.
I kind of feel this is true, and if it is, that's just sick.
If it's not true, though, then that's a whole different pot of sick going on. A lose lose situation.
