Soupy Sails

The once-legendary Soupy Sales, an immensely likable josher, has died at age 83. This video reminds that the best part of the New York-area Soupy Sales Show (also called Lunch with Soupy Sales) was the offscreen laughter from the crew. Sales' career peak happened during a live engagement at the Paramount theatre during the 1965 Easter holiday. I'd love to find a YouTube of Frank Sinatra's visit to Sales' show the same year.,

My dad told me a story once about Sales. Apparently Sales told kids via his show (during live broadcast) to go into their parent's bedrooms and take some of that "green paper" that was inside of their father's wallets and send it to him at the TV station. So funny.

Also, this is a great bit of video with Sales telling Bob Costas about a stripper incident:

My favorite Sales story came when he tried to teach Fang the alphabet. Sales would hold up a card with a letter, Fang would make a grunt, and Sales would say, "that's right, Fang, that's an 'A'." And so on.

He got to "F." Fang makes a grunt. Sales, says, "no, Fang, that's an 'F', not a 'K." They argue a bit and finally Sales throws up his hands and says, "I don't get it, Fang. Every time I show you an F you see K!"

Juvenile, sure, but funny nonetheless.

I remember when Sales worked at WNBC (66AM in NY) and he'd get into fights with Howard Stern.

It's uncanny how much his schtick really reminds me of Craig Ferguson's or I guess I should say it the other way around. Sales had more impact than I thought.

Always loved Soupy from childhood, never failed to make me laugh. Hope they serve cream pies in the great beyond.

There's one sour moment in his legacy that's always bugged me though. He was interviewed about the time of Paul Reubens' arrest for self-gratification, and he seemed almost gleeful in trashing him and the Pee-wee Herman franchise and declaring that his career as a kids' entertainer was over. Granted, it was a bad decision for Paul to be engaging in such behavior at the height of his success, and I can understand why a fellow family entertainment icon would take him to task for it, but it felt really ugly, like he considered him a rival and was happy to be rid of him. Thankfully, Paul did get that wonderful validation at the MTV awards a few months later. "Heard any good jokes lately?"

so is the "F you see K" story and all the other "clever" dirty jokes attributed to the man -- shockingly enough, not everyone in the 1960s was a lobotomized rube too slow to pick up on stuff like that

(The stripper and "green pieces of paper" stories are true, though)
