Drool
The Girl on the Train
Three or four hours ago I did a six-minute sitdown with Fantastic Mr. Fox director Wes Anderson. One of the topics was Chris Lee's 10.11 L.A. Times piece that discussed complaints from Fox dp Tristan Oliver and director of animation Mark Gustafson.
One important-sounding point Anderson made was that Lee talked to Oliver, Gustafson amd himself last June, when relations were a little bumpy. The vibe smoothed out considerably after that, he says. On top of which he spoke to Oliver after hearing from Lee and repeated what he'd been told Oliver had said, and Oliver said he'd been misunderstood or misquoted.
An hour or so later Fox costars Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman did a square-table sitdown at a pub on the outskirts of town (i.e., Great Missenden).

Good stuff, Wells. Particularly the Wes interview.
Although you could perhaps do with a better camera. You can get HD handheld things for about $300 now.

Sounds like the DP did a little backpeddling once Wes confronted him about what was said. Whatever you think of him, a DP saying that kind of stuff about a director while a film is still in production is out of line. That guy might have a tough time getting a director to trust him now.

For all the flak Anderson takes for being stuck up, he seems to handle the DP-spat quite diplomatically in this video without it sounding canned.

Jeff, why are you always so silent on the DZ thing? He's fucking up your entire message boards with this shit. He just did three posts in a row of pointless links. There is not a single person here who thinks he's contributing anything to any conversation ever. At long, long last, sir, can you please ban this piece of shit? He's not even the real DZ!

Matt - it helps a tiny little bit if you look at the links and realize that DZ only goes to about four websites, and then just posts them all here. One wonders whether, on those websites, there are links back to Hollywood-Elsewhere, "Wes Anderson - a dick?!?"

He's essentially pointing out that he's aware nobody would read a blog he makes, so he might as well try and hijack Jeff's readers. And Jeff let's him do it because he's perversely amused that it upsets us. That's the only reasoning i can come up with.

I would totally read a DZ blog, unless it was just links to shit. Have you read the stupid things he's said? Check out the 'Toy Story 3' post down below; he's currently arguing why everything about the 'Star Wars' prequels is better than the originals and, along the way, he has insulted Kurosawa, Pixar, and a few others.
The boundless stupidity he shows is amazing. I would read his blog. I wouldn't even call for his banning if he laid off of the pointless links.

As for the interview, nice work Wells. Although it bothers me that he's sort of pulling a Madonna, and adopting a tiny British accent, it's tough to discern but there. You've come a long way from Dallas, Mr. Anderson.

Gordon: I didn't say that the prequels are better, just that the Jedi do more in them than in the later films. I also didn't insult Kurosawa; I just didn't like one of his films. As for Pixar, all I'm saying is they're blowing the potential of the medium of animation with lazy story-writing.

You're not telling the joke right, DZ. What was funny was when you were arguing that Pixar's decline in storytelling took place entirely in movies that you didn't see but nevertheless felt you could speak definitively on.

It seems like Jeff and Wes both dodge the actual complaint; he wasn't complaining that the work was hard or that he was following a specific style half as much as he was complaining that Wes wasn't there. I think that, in creative works, incredibly detailed E-mails don't work very well, and come off as cold.

"I just didn't like one of his films." I'm sorry to keep feeding the troll at the expense of what's actually the subject at hand, but there are actually some things you can't say and still expect to be taken seriously in the realm of film discussion.

Gordon, you're right. Incredibly detailed E-mails don't work very well, that's why he made 'embarrassing' short films, reenacting the movements he wished for. I just don't get the issue. There were no actors there, he would've probobly pissed them off way more if he was looking over their shoulders every 6 minutes.
And DeeZee, it's just the off topic links that kill me. They're not even GOOD off topic links. Stick to the issue at hand. Please?
