All Over Hurt

Updated: As predicted last night during the ceremony, The Hurt Locker won the best feature as well as best ensemble award at the Gotham Independent Film Awards, held at Manhattan's Cipriani Wall Street. And director Kathryn Bigelow was given a career tribute. As if the Summit release needed a further boost for a Best Picture nomination. It's locked, certified...next?

(l. to r.) Hurt Locker producers producers Nicolas Chartier and Greg Shapiro, director Kathryn Bigelow, costars Anthony Mackie, Brian Gerahty, producer-screenwriter Mark Boal, star Jeremy Renner.

If those ladies I spoke to at the Regency hotel last week or those waitresses at Extra Virgin are reading this, I have a question: have you guys heard of The Hurt Locker now?

Congrats to Bigelow, producer-screenwriter Mark Boal, producers Nicolas Chartier and Greg Shapiro and costars Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Brian Geraghty, Ralph Fiennes, Guy Pearce, David Morse and Evangeline Lilly.

The Gothams' breakthrough actor award went to The Maid's Catalina Saavedra, beaing out The Hurt Locker's Renner. Robert Kenner's Food, Inc., a Magnolia release, won the best documentary prize. Big Fan director-screenwriter Robert Siegel won the breakthrough director award. And Ry Russo-Young's You Won't Miss Me was handed the Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You trophy.

In addition to Bieglow, career tribute honors were presented to actors Natalie Portman and Stanley Tucci and producers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.

The emcee was Kumail Nanjiani, a very funny guy whose name no one in the U.S. will ever be able to pronounce, much less spell or remember. He needs to change his name to Donnie Darker or Ken H. Doll (an allusion to CREEP finance guy and Watergate co-conspirator Kenneth H. Dahlberg) or whatever. Or...you know, Homie Kume. I could remember that.

Posted Last Night: Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker has just won the Best Ensemble trophy at the Gotham Film Awards, which is now about halfway through the program at Cipriani Wall Street. This means The Hurt Locker will also win the Best Feature award. Trust me -- I know how this stuff works.

And The Hurt Locker just had its chances for Oscar glory killed by the Gothams. Best as I can tell, only a handful of Gotham Award winners for Best Picture went on to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture, and not one has ever won the Big Kahuna.

Enjoy your moment in sun, very good movie that deserves much better.

Using the Gothams as a barometer for or against the Oscars based on the awards' track record is ridiculous. First of all, the Gothams haven't even been given out for that long, and the kinds of films nominated have changed quite a bit in recent years. What matters is that THE HURT LOCKER won three big awards tonight (incl. the career achievement award for Bigelow) and as such is in Oscar voters' and critics' minds that much more. Whether it gets nominated or wins or not has little to do with any cosmic confluence with the Gothams.

I think pretty much any barometer will be difficult to interpret this year anyway, with 10 nominees.

The 10 nominees gimmick is a joke. There just isn't enough quality material out there.

I agree that 10 nominees is a joke. I don`t know if it`s true that it is supposed to be a solution that would give movies like TDK a chance to get Best Picture nomination, but, ironically, this year hasn`t produced a TDK counterpart yet. Impossibly big movies got abysmal reviews (Transformers 2, New Moon) while well-reviewed genre movies didn`t become crazy big.

As for Hurt Locker, I`m wondering if Summit cares about anything but Twilight Saga. They really fucked up Hurt Locker`s theatrical release. For the movie to be a major player at the awards, being good is not enough as we all know. Not sure Summit is up to the task of Oscar campaigning or that they care as much as whether to split Breaking Dawn in two and milk more moolah from Twihards.

It's not that hard to remember. The Today Show has Hoda Kotb and Americans seem to be okay with that. The guy in the White House has a funny name, too. Americans generally get used to strange names if the person gets famous enough.

I like the "How do you like them apples?" tone of this question. But ultimately, the answer is probably still "No." I was not aware the Gotham awards were even taking place.

Jeff, you are underestimating the average joes and middle Americans yet again. I've seen the film 4 times, live in Chicago and took my mother -- from rural Michigan -- and she hands-down fell for it. Returning home she waited two months for it to open in her local multiplex so she could take both my father and her friends, but the film never made it out that far and died before it expanded. While those women you spoke to may not have heard of The Hurt Locker, they most certainly would have enjoyed and respected it.

Near Dark, Point Break, Strange Days and The Hurt Locker are all excellent pieces of work. K19 The Widowmaker is a solid studio picture. Blue Steel is ok. And I even enjoyed The Weight of Water, what a bizarre film that was!
