It's not perfect, but this two-faced Avatar poster is much grabbier than the last one I've seen (or at least remember seeing) for the U.S. market. I've been experiencing a huge blockage with the Na'vi cat noses all along. There's something in me that just doesn't care for them. They just don't strike me as particularly cool.

I'm not looking to dig my claws in and say "this is my last and only reaction to this film" -- I'm just saying the noses haven't stopped bothering me, and I sort of wish that they would. I'm looking forward to this impression going away. I'm not married to it.

I know why Cameron did what he did, but I wish he had gone non-humanoid, or at least more "alien looking" on the Na'vi. He went to all this trouble to do mo-cap, and then has the aliens look like something he could pull off with a reasonably decent makeup job.

Not a deal-breaker, to be sure, but still kind of a bummer.

Those who're wanting more "alien"-y aliens are forgetting that Cameron conceived this as a love story. You think there's a disconnect with 10-foot tall blue humanoids? Wait till Sam Worthington tried to romance something significantly more alien.

The actors, btw, are very happy that they're not in prosthetics -- they feel it really hampers their expressiveness and range of emotion. Not to mention the whole problem with these creatures having far longer legs and arms than humans. Battlefield Earth tried to do it with prosthetics.... ugh.

I imagine the people of 1927 didn't think Metropolis was great looking. But time has proved it a classic.

Colin, your statement made no fucking sense.

Come on. we're talking about the very early stage of Hollywood, when movies were barely 2 (3?) decades old and being shown to delighted audiences all over the nation. 1927 audiences can't be compared to today's audiences, for god's sake!

today, we get at least 10-20 big budget action/fantasy/sci fi movies a year. Harry Potter, LOTR, Terminator, Transformers, etc... nothing really dazzles the audience anymore, because we've seen it all.

I would imagine that in 1927, Metropolish was something amazing, innovative, new, and exciting.

My enthusiasm is drained with every new promotional ad/spot I see. This poster is no exception.

I watched the four minute clip that leaked online today (I believe the comic-con clip) and, despite being entertained, was still underwhelmed. Hopefully the "photo-realistic" 3-D helps, but, ultimately, it's still a gimmick.

After seeing the trailers and clip, I feel as though Cameron thinks this is all mind-blowingly original. Like he hasn't seen a tentpole in 12 years.

Still, I could be very, very wrong.

I just can't buy the concept that Sam Worthington would want to fuck a 10 foot azure bipedal leopard. Unless they show that he's got some kind of feline fetish (like the dude with the rat in The Abyss). Maybe Cameron's included a 10 minute erotic petting or grooming session at the beginning of the film to demonstrate Worthington's felinaphilic predilections. Perhaps he'll call his faithful familiar "Jonesy" to get all the geeks wet.

At 3 HOURS-- can people handle 3D for that length of time? I get migraines after about 20 minutes of it. Much like the handheld shaky-cam (which doesn't affect me a bit), some people are gonna be running, retching from the theater from 166 minutes of nonstop distorted vision.

Cameron is a legend but... yeah, this kinda looks like LEGEND.

Teen boys are a key to rewatch success, and I can't picture a packed house of delinquents in the Valley watching this and thinking it looks awesome. More like "Daaaaamn, that shit's all fuckin' stupid and shit, what the fuuuuuck?"

I can believe "a love story between a riding lawn mower and an iPhone" because I am neither a lawn mower nor an iPhone. I can even believe a story about an alien falling in love with a human. But I cannot believe a human falling in love with an alien that doesn't look human (a la Starman).

You know, I'm surprised we thus far haven't gotten a glorious Wells rant about the most off-putting image in all the Avatar trailers (and the shot's been in every spot I've seen):

Ugh, man feet. *Alien blue man feet.* There's that shot of Worthington's avatar regaining feeling in its toes, and it flexes them with its big, stupid wrinkly blue soles right in the camera lens in some distorto-vision? Just embarrassing to see, and one of those things you want to go away IMMEDIATELY. How can a master like Cameron not know that gross alien feet up in the lens is an unfortunate image? Detract 100 points from the cool factor right there.

Rich S. Author Profile Page says ...

LexG, I'm pretty sure the reason that alien feet scene is in there is because Worthington's human character is paralyzed from the waist down. He's flexing his avatar feet because he hasn't had the use of his own feet in quite some time.

Just guessing.

That seems a fair enough point (toes flexing). I haven't been super impressed with any of the trailers or clips or stills, but I'm still seeing it in 3D during its opening day and suspect the overall vibe of the movie (and the 90% of it that we haven't seen) will have rewards enough to remove most doubts.

Dunno why Metropolis wasn't well-recieved when it first came out, but I'm guessing it was due to tackling social issues no one wanted to hear, unless they involved white-washing slavery and racism in the South before and after the Civil War. Plus, it came out before the stock market crash, when it might have been more successful during the Depression.

As for Avatar, we've already seen plenty of anti-Iraq war movies which have bombed. So I'm not sure why anyone thinks a new one which is more expensive than the usual versions will guarantee a bigger audience, when they'll probably end up opting for that Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel in its place.

And Titanic made money, because it appealed to a particular target audience which happened to have the hots for the star of the movie at that time. I'm not sure who Avatar appeals to, other than people who think Star Trek and Star Wars are too "mainstream" nowadays.

James Cameron is smarter than me in kind of lunkheaded ways-- I'm way too smart to have written the line "Oh great, it's the queen bitch of the universe," or to have sunk one of the most influential paintings of all time where nobody would ever see it-- but nobody gets more emotional effect out of Hollywood action stuff, the whole town has spent two decades trying to copy that, unsuccessfully. Anything you can say about why you don't want to see blue cats making out, you could say just as well about the father-son relationship between a kid and Arnold Schwarzenegger as a robot, and yet Terminator 2 is the Ordinary People of action movies.

It's always possible that he's too old and rich and blase to get it up any more, but I'd bet that Cameron wrings every last bit of cheap sentiment out of his blue cat people, and reminds us why we love movies in the process.
