Free AT&T Service for Life?

I first saw Luke Wilson's "better 3G experience" AT&T ad yesterday. My first thought was "why is he doing this?" Then I figured okay, the last thing he did that really connected was his nice-guy-brother role in The Family Stone, and Luke's last semi-popular Eloi movie was My Super Ex-Girlfriend and...well, also that Henry Poole Is Here didn't fly and TV ads pay pretty well. Nothing wrong with a little financial fortification.

Then I thought "gee, maybe Luke should work out a bit more, drop a few pounds." Then I wondered where the trailer is to Neil Labute's upcoming Death at a Funeral (Screen Gems, 4.16), a mostly black remake of the '09 British comedy that Wilson costars in. Then I remembered that I almost bought the Blu-ray Bottle Rocket a couple of days ago but that I held back because what I really want is a Blu-ray Rushmore.

I was going to give you a hard time about going off on your weight kick again, but I have to admit I thought the same exact thing when I first saw these commercials.

Doing a commercial isn't the stigma it once was, particularly when, like Luke, you're hovering around "that guy" status. ("Hey, it's that guy from Old School!") If it keeps food on the table and keeps you away from reality TV, I think it's okay.

A few years back, a waiter seating me and the mrs. made a big deal that we would be sitting at the table just vacated by Luke. Wonder if the waiter would be so gaga now. Luke is good, however, in that small role in 3:10 to Yuma.

He failed to capitalize on the Old School popularity. Look at Vaughn and Ferrell since then.

Vaughn was kind of in career doldrums at the time, having recently been in dreck like The Cell and Domestic Disturbance. Ferrell was just starting out on his career as a star and not just a supporting player. Yet Old School was hit, and the two never looked back. But Luke Wilson didn't really do much with it. He kind of drifted around in these sub-par projects and now he's doing commercials. It's a shame because he's good. And I guess it's also a cautionary tale for the Hangover guys.

The dude just starred in a direct-to-video Jessica Simpson comedy. He should be stoked to get the AT&T gig.

These do Luke Wilson NO favors- i think if anything it puts a glaring spotlight on how little he has done lately. and on top of that he looks a bit chubby and old and the commercial is about as lame as you can get.

its like showing up to your 10 year reunion in sweatpants with your mother on your arm.

was it really that long ago that Luke had a big role in "Tenebaums", was shagging G.Paltrow, and was lean and handsome? Ugh. How the mighty have fallen.

Truth is this guy has worked consistently since then, but hasn't really been in a good film ever since. And he looks "doughy". I would have less of an issue with this ad if it weren't for the fact that he's being a pitchman here. It's not like those funny Clooney TV ads shown overseas where George is playing it up for humor, etc.

Paycheck is a paycheck. But this is a pretty weird choice for Luke, unless he really wanted/needed that money.

Stringer the paydays nice, but i can't remember a more career killing commercial in recent memory. He (was) a big-ish star, and then to do a BORING commercial like this as basically a BORING pitchman, how is that going to make anyone want to give you a movie role.

maybe it was already pretty dried up and he had to grab it, but he's even dressed boringly awful.

i don't know, i cringe.

He gives his best performance since TENENBAUMS in George Gallo's new film MIDDLE MEN which is getting a limited release Dec. 11. Look into it. I think you'd like it, Gruver.

This guy is a bland, charismaless waste of screen space who's been lucky to get to where he is.

yeah, i really gotta agree with dinovelvet.

funny how Luke was the actor and Owen was just a writer who only acted in BOTTLE ROCKET because they needed him, right? Owen comes across as much more charismatic.

I have to ask: does Luke Wilson care so much about acting that if he never worked again -- just happily lived the rest of his life with the millions he's made so far -- it would eat him up inside? Because the vibe I get from him is that, yeah, it's nice working and all... but if he sat at home in his million-dollar bachelor pad, enjoying the finer things... well, gosh, that's just the way life works, no big deal.

I realize that lazy, "aw shucks" quality is how & why he's usually cast, and he may actually be cutthroat and driven and willing to do ANYTHING to succeed... but if so, that's probably his greatest acting job of all. Because I don't think the guy cares that much... in which case, more power to you, Luke -- why NOT do an AT&T ad?
