There are a couple of things to note (Yes, I work in this industry and no I don't work for Google).

1. Google Spiders - There is going to be an issue with Google spidering the site regardless if Google "turned off thier spiders" or not. All of the content is in JavaScript and cannot be seen by ANY engines spiders. This is going to hurt with their natural results.

2. "The notice was vague, failing to specify which policies we had violated." - I am guessing that their spend/income was very very low and they did not have a dedicated Rep. Ultimately Google cares about two things. Income and their properties. Any time I have had a Google problem, I have always been able to speak to a rep and get the skinny on what was going on.

2a. "We unveiled the blog last April, augmenting our items with a few images and YouTube videos" - Google is HYPER-protective of content on YouTube. I am wondering if they violated any of the copyright rules.

Look, we all want to go with the "Google is a big company and is bad" mantra, but Google is not the only game in town. You can add Bing/Yahoo links internally to generate income. You can use social media tools like Twitter/Facebook, etc to generate additional traffic to your site. You can have good SEO and not have your entire site in Java so spiders from all engines can crawl your site. You can buy paid search at AOL/Bing/Yahoo/Ask and drive traffic to your site.

Someone either game him poor advice, they are being lazy (or have no resources for their web site) or they are playing "Woe is me". I am guessing it is all three.

Google is evil. I've dealt with them and their Adsense BS. they make you jump through hoops and then figure out a way to screw you in the end. When you ask for a reason, they just ignore - why? Because they're Google and you're not.

Google is evil. Their corporate jet kills polar bears! Someday i hope they are wiped off the cyber landscape.

Wasn't StudioBriefing owned by one of Rupert Murdoch's companies? Murdoch's been talking publicly about trying to get his content removed from Google - maybe this was a retaliatory strike?
