Insult to Injury

Okay, yes -- it's slightly more dismissive for Couples Retreat costars Faizon Love and Kali Hawk to be completely zotzed out of the British one-sheet as opposed to being reduced to the really small guys in the rear (i.e., whom no one outside of friends, family and management could possibly notice or care about) in the U.S. version. From an art direction standpoint, the British poster is obviously less crowded and more pleasing to the eye.

Couples Retreat poster (l.) vs.U.S. version (r.)

Universal has reportedly apologized to any and all offended parties and has pledged to not use the revised poster in other countries A Universal spokesman said the revised advert aimed 'to simplify the poster to actors who are most recognizable in international markets.'"

No, that's kind of the opposite implication isn't it? The poster where Faizon Love and Kali Hawk were still in it was the US version. The "other parts of the world" version had them deleted.

If the characters were played by Will Smith and Halle Berry, then yes, there's an issue. But are we really seeing a controversy in an ad focusing on FAMOUS FACES AND NAMES over "the guy from Friday" and a complete unknown?

PastePotPete,
I think Phreaker is implying that outside marketers are concerned only with form and function. U.S. marketers only included Faizon plus 1 due to PC driven fears.

btw, i don't think that they were originally included out of fear of criticism from Rainbow/Push etc. There's 40M black people here, and you don't want to portray your movie as an episode of Friends. The UK is only like 2 percent black, so you can go with the better poster.

If a person is looking to be offended, they will invariably find offenses everywhere they look.

You know what I want to know... are Faizon Love and Kali Hawk upset about this alleged faux pas. If they aren't pissed off about being left off the poster, why should anyone else be?

This is so funny can Universal doing anything else wrong? They just got in trouble over some kind of false story or something like that for The Fourth Kind... This is not even counting the horrile year they have had so far

They cut out the two least famous people from the poster. Who happen to be black. Actually I'm surprised that for the Brit poster, they didn't stick Jean Reno (Leon was and is HUGE in the UK) and Peter Serafinowicz on it (as he's been promoting it there).

Dare I say that Vince and Fav are looking just a little more buff for the UK poster?

I think they did the black actors a favour: I mean would you want to be associated with a piece of sh-t like COUPLES RETREAT?

heh.

well, at first when I looked at the UK poster, I thought, "that's fucked up," but then I could see how aesthetically pleasing the new revised poster is. The original poster DOES look rather crowded.

Does anyone know or care that these are two completely different photos?

Different locations, clothes, poses, etc.

Although the one on the left look likes a Photoshop composite, so perhaps "photo" is inaccurate.

How is it possible simplify the poster to actors who are most recognizable in international markets ? This must be a joke. From graphic design's perspective, American Poster looks absolutely amazing, very pleasant to the eye, the other one is too busy, colors are too heavy, I can not believe that someone actually approved that design.
