Mirren Kudos Deserved

While I have concerns about aspects of Michael Hoffman's The Last Station (Sony Classics, 12.4), I certainly understand and agree with the Helen Mirren-for-Best Actress thing. Her performance as Sofya Tolstoy is a little florid, but I think that's appropriate given who and what she is and what she's up against. Her spirit is infectious, intxoicating.

She and Plummer are the movie, which is otherwise middlebrow Oscar gruel with impoverished cinematography.

Whatever happened to "Love Ranch," the highly touted movie directed by Mirren's husband, Taylor Hackford, where she plays the madam of a bordello? I seem to remember it was supposed to be her follow-up to The Queen and that tit was pretty much in the can when she won her Oscar two and a half years ago.

Where did James McAvoy come from that we're apparently stuck with him forever? I don't really dislike him on screen, I loved WANTED, liked Atonement....

But has anyone -- like, ANYONE EVER -- said, "Oh, cool, THE NEW JAMES MCAVOY MOVIE comes out this weekend!" He's kind of here nor there, no?

Pretty appropriate slip, considering the subject matter and the fact that we're talking about Helen Mirren.

ROTC, "Love Ranch" is one of the films (including the David O Russell film "Nailed") that is tied up in litigation because of the money woes of Capitol Films.

I don't know if I'd count on seeing it anytime soon.

McAvoy did a good job in that clip. I've never been impressed with him before.

Fox should have used that World Series TV Spot for Avatar Day.
