New Kid in Town

Among the four breakout performances mentioned on 10.30 by the N.Y. Times Karen Durbin, there's no question who makes the most robust impression and who seems (to me anyway) the most talented, personable and charming -- A Single Man's Nicholas Hoult, who's not yet 20.

Nicholas Hoult in Tom Ford's A Single Man

Guys this young rarely have this kind of quietly charismatic confidence. Either way he exudes something that feels steady beyond his years. Focus, discipline, some kind of tick-tocky metronomic thing going on inside. Hoult doesn't seem to be playing an alert and confident student who talks straight, knows how to handle his feelings, and has the confidence to speak his mind (and heart) -- he seems to be this guy. That's solid acting. Plus he has astonishing eyes and a great smile.

Of course, a lot of what I'm describing is due in part to Tom Ford's writing and direction of A Single Man. I'm sure Hoult is capable of seeming mediocre, given half a chance. Who isn't?

Intriguing as they may seem to others, Durbin's other three -- Up In The Air's Anna Kendrick, The Road's Kodi Smit-Mcphee and Fish Tank's Katie Jarvis -- strike me as less formidable, presence-wise, and probably less talented (or certainly less developed) than Hoult.

yeah, this kid was the lead for 2 years in an ensemble on a british teen soap called "Skins" (excellent tv, btw), and it's clear he's going to be a phenom... (as were a few others in the cast- including the kid who became slumdog millionaire, the show's going to launch several stars)... and within a few minutes of screen time, the kid commands your attention. and over the course of a couple years, he shows a pretty impressive range.

He was terrific in About a Boy, and yes, really great in "Skins". He appears to have a great future before him. Of the other 3, Anna Kendrick has done some good work on stage (she was the only good thing in "High Society", for which she got a Tony nomination at age 13.). I thought she stole a little movie called "Camp" a few years ago and after that I figured she'd have a good career if she made the right choices. She's stuck in the "Twilight" stuff but after that -- we'll see.

LexG with a PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT TO ALL PARENTS:

Whatever you do as a parent, you really should -- should almost be REQUIRED TO -- get your son or daughter involved in acting as soon as possible. Contrary to popular opinion, being a crazy stage mom or dad is doing a HUGE SERVICE to your kid.

It's like the LA/NYC/London equivalent to a Pennsylvania or Texas dad making goddamn sure his son plays football 23 hours a day, joins every sport, football camp, and is NFL-ready by the time he's 16. It is simply giving your kid a leg up on life.

Imagine if this Hoult kid had grown up in St. Louis, or Columbus OH, or Providence RI, to sensible parents who scoffed at his acting aspirations and DIDN'T get him an agent or commercial auditions or a SAG card. This kid would today be wasting away at some lame college not really learning much and barely having a life... he'd go on to get a sensible job, a sensible car, a sensible girlfriend or wife, then LOSE HIS FUCKING MIND in his 20s or 30s and move to NYC or LA, where it would be TOOOOO LATE to get into acting, because it is a CLOSED BUSINESS, SAG IS A CLOSED GUILD, to anyone who doesn't have nepotism or youth on their side.

So PLEASE when you're raising your little brat, put that little prick in commercials and get him or her to audition for EVERYTHING; What's the worst that could happen? He grows up to be Corey Feldman and STILL lives in a mansion and gets reality gigs and NEVER HAS TO WORK A DAY IN HIS LIFE, not to mention he had the GREATEST TIME EVER for most of the '80s?

I wish I could sue my entire family for not driving me out to L.A and getting me an agent when I was eight.

Maybe it's just me, but doesn't it seem like all of these "talent to watch" lists featuring the "new guard" of young actors tend to fizzle out with few if any of the people mentioned going on to have much of an impact?

I saw Hoult in Skins and I didn't think he was all that special. That whole show was pretty dull for me. Most British TV is kind of lacking, so maybe it looks better in comparison. It's just more teen angst melodrama set to a hip soundtrack.

Something tells me this kid isn't gonna make the splash people are expecting him to. At least not in the US. It seems like the public mind only has so many spots allotted to foreign talent here and I don't know if he can hold up to the competition. Plus, aren't Australians all the rage here now?

Hoult was probably the most boring of the cast of Skins. The kid in the woollen hat and Slumdog boy were far more engaging on screen. Hoult smarmed his way through scenes and gave a pretty wooden stage school delivery of his lines. He's not all that. He's a boring actor - he was boring in The Weather Man too.

"the last couple of eps on 'skins' first season were literally (yes, literally) some of the most shocking tv i've ever seen..."
